The Leadership Legacy Experience is the University of Connecticut's most elite, immersive leadership program that helps prepare talented students for a life of commitment and contribution beyond graduation. UConn Waterbury will be hosting Suicide Prevention Week. Students will be able to participate in the "Field of Memories" activity throughout the week, engage in mental health screenings and get resources from community providers. 

Several community agencies will be on campus during Suicide Prevention Week to provide educational information to students on suicide prevention and resources. 

Students will be given small yellow flags to write encouraging messages to one another. These flags will be placed in the grass in the courtyard as a representation of the number of college students that end their life to suicide each year. The "field" will be on display all week.

Maternal Health Group A support group for pregnant and parenting students designed to provide education and support around the transition to motherhood and navigating the stress of higher education. Group will be co-facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker and an APRN. Specific topics to be discussed include exploring transitions to motherhood, discussing mental health concerns, promoting healthy sleep habits, attachment and bonding, creating healthy work/school/life balance, and many others. Title: Three approaches to building the real numbers. Abstract: Historically, there have been two standard ways to make a rigorous definition of the real numbers: Dedekind's method using Dedekind cuts and Cantor's method using Cauchy sequences of rational numbers. We will review these approaches, indicate their advantages and disadvantages as well as generalizations that each admits, and then present a third way to define the real numbers that was worked out only in the past 50 years.

Ashley Shaw is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Leeds. He received his PhD from UCL in 2019. He works in the Philosophy of Mind and Action; in particular, on the nature of desire, rational agency, reasons for action, and how they are related. He is currently working on a book on the nature of desire in rational agents, as well as related projects on need, self-control, and self-knowledge of desire.Abstract: Is Desire a Natural Kind? This paper evaluates an approach to theorising about desire as a natural kind. I clarify what this approach involves and distinguish between natural kinds and scientific kinds, proper subsets of natural kinds employed in certain scientific disciplines. I argue against two accounts of desire that identify the kind desire with the scientific kinds employed in the psychology and neuroscience of motivation and reward. I explore the prospects for rescuing the natural kind approach by giving up the claim that desire is a scientific kind and theorising about desire instead as a superordinate natural kind, a natural kind of natural scientific kinds.

All Recovery Meetings are available for UConn students. The meetings are a gathering for all who struggle with substance use and/or other mental and behavioral health disorders. An All Recovery meeting is 'non-denominational' meaning all pathways of recovery are embraced here. A universal recovery topic is chosen and then the group discusses it. It is not affiliated with any "Anonymous" program although you are likely to hear comments associated with 12 step fellowships. Meetings are facilitated by a student member of the URC supported by a Recovery Coach and held in person and online for students from all of UConn's campuses.
