- 11:15 AM50mAlgebra Seminar - Explicit computation of characteristics quantities of non-hyperelliptic curvesComputation of not normalized periods of the first and second kinds, and the vector of Riemann constants will be presented. Finding the vector of Riemann constants on a non-hyperelliptic curve seems to be an open problem, which is now effectively solved. We compute the associated system of first and second kind periods, which are required for computation of multiply periodic ℘-functions. The latter are used for uniformization of the curve by means of the Jacobi inversion problem.
- 11:15 AM50mCANCELED: Separate & Unequal: An Intro to U.S. Territorial GovernanceCurrent Judicial Developments in the Relationship Between the United States, Puerto Rico & Other Territories is a three-part series of events sponsored by the University of Connecticut Puerto Rican Studies Initiative, El Instituto, and the University of Connecticut School of Law Latino Law Students Association and the Human Rights Law Association. Gustavo A. Gelpí is a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, which has appellate jurisdiction over cases from the Districts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine and Puerto Rico. As a U.S. District Judge, Gelpí presided over United States v. Vaello Madero. Therein, he held that the Equal Protection rights of US citizens in Puerto Rico were violated by Congress not extending SSI benefits by virtue of residence in a territory. On appeal, the First Circuit affirmed, however the Supreme Court subsequently reversed. Judge Gelpí teaches at law schools in Puerto Rico and Hawai'i a seminar on U.S. Territories, and has lectured on territorial issues across the Nation, as well as in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands and Panama (formerly the U.S. Canal Zone). He is also the author of several articles on territorial issues and of the book The Constitutional Evolution of Puerto Rico and Other U.S. Territories (1898-Present). 1st series of events: Separate and Unequal: An Introduction to U.S. Territorial Governance When: 11:15am - 12:05pm Where: University of Connecticut Room 204, 2nd Floor J. - 1:30 PM1hUConn/UMass Joint Statistics Colloquium @ UMASS: Mary Salvana, University of ConnecticutMulti- and Mixed-Precision Computations for Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Statistics Presented by Mary Salvana, Assistant Professor University of ConnecticutDate:Thursday, October 10, 2024, 1:30 pm- lunch at 12:45 pm.Zoom link (https://umass-amherst.zoom.us/j/97526343811?pwd=83oup9DBFLZrgGBUJe4ekWcQQz3Gd3.1)Meeting ID: 975 2634 3811Passcode: 188450Abstract: Computational statistics has traditionally utilized double-precision (64-bit) data structures and full-precision operations, resulting in higher-than-necessary accuracy for certain applications. Recently, there has been a growing interest in exploring low-precision options that could reduce computational complexity while still achieving the required level of accuracy. This trend has been amplified by new hardware such as NVIDIA's Tensor Cores in their V100, A100, and H100 GPUs, which are optimized for mixed-precision computations, Intel CPUs with Deep Learning (DL) boost, Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), ARM CPUs, and others. However, using lower precision may introduce numerical instabilities and accuracy issues. Nevertheless, some applications have shown robustness to low-precision computations, leading to new multi- and mixed-precision algorithms that balance accuracy and computational cost. To address this need, we introduce MPCR, a novel R package that supports three different precision types (16-, 32-, and 64-bit) and their combinations, along with its usage in commonly-used Frequentist/Bayesian statistical examples. The MPCR package is written in C++ and integrated into R through the Rcpp package, enabling highly optimized operations in various precisions. Moreover, we show how to leverage low precision computations for spatial and spatio-temporal statistics.Bio: Mary Lai Salvana is an Assistant Professor in Statistics at the University of Connecticut (UConn). Prior to joining UConn, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Mathematics at University of Houston. She received her Ph.D. in Statistics at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. She obtained her BS and MS degrees in Applied Mathematics from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines, in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Her research interests include extreme and catastrophic events, risks, disasters, spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, environmental statistics, computational statistics, large-scale data science, and high-performance computing.

- 3:30 PM1h 30mHDFS Luckey Lecture Series, Dana Thomson, PhDStrategies to Address Structural Barriers to Economic Inclusion and Well-being Among Families Experiencing Poverty in the United States Over the past quarter century, significant strides have been made in reducing child poverty, largely due to increased investments in the social safety net for children. Our nation has learned a lot about what works to reduce child poverty. However, significant challenges to sustaining and continuing this progress remain. In particular, stark disparities in child poverty among racial and ethnic lines, for children in immigrant families, and by family structure persist. In addition, the focus of support has shifted towards working families near or above the poverty line, inadvertently leaving behind children and families experiencing deep poverty. Dr. Thomson will share findings across multiple projects designed to better understand the structural barriers to economic inclusion and wellbeing for families of color, immigrant families, and those experiencing deep poverty. She will highlight policy levers and programmatic strategies that show promise for addressing those barriers, promoting economic inclusion, and improving wellbeing for all children and families. Sponsored by the Department of Human Development & Family Sciences, with generous support from the Luckey family. If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at 860.486.4049 or cynthia.stewart@uconn.edu (mailto:cynthia.stewart@uconn.edu) by Wednesday, October 2nd.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: Why should we care about a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem, by Alvaro Lozano-Robledo (UConn)The Pythagorean Theorem is old news. Pythagoras was born in 570 BC but, in fact, we know proofs of "his" theorem that are much, much older than Pythagoras himself. Nowadays there are over 350 different proofs of the Pythagorean theorem in print, and yet many rejoiced when two high-school students from New Orleans, Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson, discovered a new proof of the theorem in 2023. However, is this theorem relevant today? Why is there such an emphasis on this particular theorem? Why would anyone be excited about a new proof of a theorem that already has over 350 proofs? Why are new proofs of old theorems interesting? More importantly, do you know a proof of this theorem? In this talk we will discuss all of these questions, and present a few proofs along the way, including the recent one by Jackson and Johnson.Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
