- All dayBob Wyss on "Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal"Coal's central role in America's history and its ongoing threats in the climate crisis. For decades coal has been crucial to America's culture, society, and environment, an essential ingredient in driving out winter's cold, cooking meals, and lighting the dark. In the coalfields and beyond, Bob Wyss describes how this magical elixir sparked the Industrial Revolution, powered railroads, and built urban skylines, while providing home comforts for families. Coal's history and heritage are fundamental to understanding its legacy of threats to America's well-being. As industry developed so did clashes between powerful tycoons, coal miners, and innocent families. Exploitation and avarice led to victimization, deadly violence, and ultimately the American labor movement. More recently coal has endangered American lives and safety, brought on by two centuries of carbon combustion, and here the threat remains unresolved. This is coal's most enduring legacy, and Black Gold is pivotal in helping us understand how we got to this point.

- 3:30 PM1hMCB Seminar Series: Dr. Nelson LauDr. Nelson LuAssociate Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Director, Genome Science Institute (GSI) Boston University Host: Barbara MelloneThe battle between piRNAs and transposons & viruses in flies and mosquitoes PiRNAs are small RNAs bound by Piwi proteins that are encoded in all animal genomes to target and silence transposons and certain germline genes. Since many transposons are evolutionarily related to viruses, we hypothesize that viruses are also subjected to piRNA regulation in invertebrates like insects. However, the dynamic regulation of the transcriptional trigger for piRNA expression is poorly understood. In my talk, Vignette #1 will be about our discovery of the Drosophila female ovary transcription factor called Traffic Jam that is a key piRNA cluster activator. Vignette #2will be about discovering novel viruses that feed into the Piwi – piRNA pathway. The converging themes is our effort to understand how piRNAs balance the regulation of transposons and viruses in animals.About Nelson Lau: Nelson Lau earned his Ph.D. in David Bartel's lab at MIT/Whitehead Institute developing one of the first methods toclone and make libraries of microRNAs. He then extended this method of small RNA library preparations to discoverPiwi-interacting RNAs while a postdoc in Robert Kingston's lab at Harvard/Mass General Hospital. Nelson Lau's lab atBoston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is currently studying how fruit flies and mosquitoes aregenerating small RNAs from transposons and viruses.Traffic Jam activates the Flamenco piRNA cluster locus and the Piwi pathway to ensure transposon silencing and Drosophila fertility (http://Traffic%20Jam%20activates%20the%20Flamenco%20piRNA%20cluster%20locus%20and%20the%20Piwi%20pathway%20to%20ensure%20transposon%20silencing%20and%20Drosophila%20fertility)Global genomics of Aedes aegypti unveils widespread and novel infectious viruses capable of triggering a small RNA responseLau Lab website (https://laulab.bu.edu)
