- 12:00 PM1hDoctoral Dissertation Oral Proposal, David EtimAbstract:The increasing adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has generated vast amounts of clinical data that hold significant potential for improving patient care. However, much of this data is in unstructured text format, posing challenges for effective analysis and utilization. This doctoral dissertation aims to explore the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to EHRs, with the objective of enhancing decision-making processes in the healthcare domain. By leveraging various NLP models, this research seeks to extract valuable insights from unstructured clinical data, thereby supporting healthcare providers in making more informed and timely decisions regarding patient treatment, disease detection, and health progression in patients. The proposed study involves the development of an NLP model and comparison of various algorithms using annotated EHR datasets from open-source platforms. The model is fine-tuned to the specific context of healthcare to accurately identify and classify clinical terms, diagnoses, and treatment information. The extracted information will be used to build predictive models that can forecast patient outcomes and treatment efficacy, providing actionable insights for healthcare providers. Furthermore, the research will integrate NLP-generated insights with existing Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) to enhance their real-time decision-making capabilities. The proposed system will be evaluated in a simulated clinical environment to assess its impact on improving patient outcomes and reducing clinical errors. This dissertation will contribute to the community and knowledge exchange on NLP applications in healthcare, demonstrating the potential of advanced data analytics to transform clinical practice. By enhancing the ability of healthcare providers to analyze and interpret complex clinical data, this research aims to support more personalized and effective patient care, while advancing the field of healthcare informatics.

- 7:30 PM1hUConn Coastal Perspectives Lecture – freeVisit the UConn Coastal Perspectives website for connection information. These lectures are being offered online and in-person. Tuesday, April 8, 2025; 7:30 p.m. Giovanna McClenachan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University Human-natural systems and the climate resilience of coastal communities Human-natural systems along the coast are at risk from climate change impacts of flooding (ocean, river, and precipitation driven) and extreme heat. These impacts are disproportionally felt by low-income neighborhoods and marginalized ethnicized and racialized (MER) communities, but these communities are rarely targeted for resilience solutions. Social infrastructure, like parks, community centers, and libraries, has been shown to increase the climate resilience by strengthening communal bonds and exchange of knowledge. Nature-based social infrastructure (NBSI), like parks, community gardens, and beaches, may provide added ecological benefits such as flooding and extreme heat mitigation. This talk will discuss drivers of coastal change and resilience and how NBSI could be part of the solution to increasing the social and ecological resilience of all communities that climate change will impact.
