- 12:00 PM1hDoctoral Dissertation Oral Defense, Chenyu ZhangAbstract:Cell type Identification is critical for understanding the functional heterogeneity of cells in complex biological systems. By identifying and categorizing cells based on their molecular profiles and functional roles, researchers can uncover the underlying mechanisms of tissue development, immune responses, and disease progression. With recent advancements in cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies, we are now able to identify subtypes, accurately predict cell types in tissues, and study their interrelationships at the single-cell level. Existing algorithms assign cell type nomenclature typically by (i) subgrouping cells by computing proximity of cellular gene expression patterns at the single cell level, (ii) identifying marker genes in each cluster, and (iii) performing a lookup of these genes in the literature and databases to assign cell type/subtype labels. Unfortunately, this approach falls short when classifying cells based on functions, because biological function(s) of a group of cells cannot be determined based on a limited set of marker genes. This dissertation aims to develop more robust clustering and training strategies and refining data interpretation and visualization in downstream analysis by interjecting and utilizing Functional Annotations (i.e. Gene Ontology Biological Processes) as prior knowledge for Statistical and Deep Learning models. Building on what I presented in my oral proposal, we present two ways of utilizing functional information in Functional Subtype Clustering: Abstract Functional Analysis (AFA) which combines both the conventional unsupervised clustering and the consensus clustering and Functional Annotation Analysis (FAA) which leverages Mutual Information to dissect interrelationships among gene expression patterns of functionally aggregated groups of genes. Building on both data visualization tools and clustering methods, we design FuncNet, a DL model capable of enhancing neural cell type classification through functional subtype clustering. Finally, we proposed a framework of leveraging Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipline to provide comprehensive and interpretable insights into cellular functions.

- 12:15 PM1hPSLA Seminar Series: Chandi WitharanaHost: Julia SmachyloLocation: YNG 132Webex: s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars (http://s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars) Above and Beyond: Integrated Sensing Systems for Environmental Insights Chandi Witharana is an Assistant Professor in the UConn Department of Natural Resources and the Environment. Trained as a geologist, his expertise lies in remote sensing and geospatial science, with a particular focus on methodological innovations that advance the analysis of large, multi-modal remote sensing datasets captured from ground-, drone- and satellite-based sensors. From city streets to the Arctic tundra, understanding our changing environment requires innovative monitoring tools. This talk highlights how integrated sensing systems—combining drones, satellites, and vehicle-based imaging—are transforming environmental insights. Drones track crop health and optimize agricultural practices, satellites reveal climate-driven permafrost disturbances in the Arctic, and vehicle-mounted cameras capture patterns of roadside vegetation and urban greenery in Connecticut. Harnessing advances in remote sensing and artificial intelligence provides faster and scalable ways to model our landscapes, enabling informed decision-making and sustainable solutions.

Traumatic experiences or relationships often lead us to develop unhealthy coping strategies such as, social isolation/anxiety, quickly jumping into unhealthy relationships, difficulty with trusting and enforcing our boundaries when we need them most or increased alcohol, cannabis, or other drug use. Unbreakable: Rising from Within provides a supportive and confidential environment for students to begin the healing process by learning about common reactions to trauma and ways to recognize and overcome these potentially debilitating triggers. We will work to remind ourselves of the importance of boundaries, increase self-confidence and learn and practice healthier coping strategies to promote overall health and wellbeing. To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700 (tel:+18604864705) This session is held by Cassaundra Popek, LMFT (https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/person/cassaundra-popek-lmft/) For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. - 3:30 PM1hUConn Physics ColloquiumProf. Shane L. Larson, Clarkson UniversityThe Landscape of Multi-Messenger Astronomy in the LISA ERA In the next decade, the LISA gravitational-wave observatory will begin observations in the low-frequency part of the gravitational wave spectrum, increasing the number of known sources in the gravitational-wave catalog by several orders of magnitude. Among those sources will be thousands of multi-messenger systems that astronomers can mine for information about the Universe. In this talk, we will examine the ultra-compact binary population of the Milky Way, and discuss the power of combining both gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations. We'll give several vignettes of how the two observational mediums may be used in concert to probe a variety of different astrophysical phenomena in the stellar graveyard.
