- 12:30 PM1hDecision Making and Communication about Inherited Cancer RiskPrevivors are individuals who have increased lifetime risk of hereditary cancer due to a pathogenic genetic variant but who have not been diagnosed with cancer. An inherent aspect of living with a pathogenic variant increasing cancer risk is uncertainty. Previvors unable to manage this uncertainty are at risk for negative outcomes such as heightened psychological distress over time and impeded health decision-making. Drawing on my decade of cancer communication research and personal experiences with inherited cancer, in this talk, I will present two projects focused how previvors manage cancer-related uncertainty, make health and fertility decisions, and communicate inherited cancer risk information with their family members and clinicians. Implications will highlight how psychosocial interventions and communication tools can aid in decision-making and ultimately enhance emotional well-being and long-term survival. - 12:30 PM1hFighting for Nature in Nineteenth-Century New York CityPublic parks were under threat in the dense and industrializing district of downtown Manhattan during the second half of the nineteenth century. Green spaces lost acres to infrastructure like a post office, a military drilling ground, and a railroad—even though working-class people who lived nearby depended on parks for fun and fresh air that they thought was crucial to their health. Mars Plater will present a story of working-class immigrants fighting back, defending their local park and demanding access to green space as their right. - 4:00 PM1hRisk, Insurance and the Welfare StateAt the core of the modern welfare state is the institution of social insurance, which provides event-conditioned benefits through a publicly orchestrated system of contributions and distribution. At the core of the modern welfare state is the institution of social insurance, which provides event-conditioned benefits through a publicly orchestrated system of contributions and distribution. Tracing an intellectual history of the practice from the time of the French Revolution through the present, this talk offers an account of how and why social insurance became one of the central policy tools of wealthy democracies. This history reveals that the way in which risk is conceived and calculated has important consequences for the design of social policy. It also shows that the capacity of social insurance to accommodate a plurality of normative principles and aims helps to account for its prominence and political resilience as an institution. Professor Friedman's book, Probable Justice: Risk, Insurance, and the Welfare State (Chicago: 2020) is available for those interested in reading further.

- 4:00 PM1hTeale Lecture: Conceptual Frameworks and New Frontiers in Energy JusticeAbstract: Energy justice has emerged as a potent topic, approach, and theme within recent energy and climate research. This presentation explores how concepts from justice and ethics can inform energy decision-making and highlight the futurity, fairness, and equity dimensions of energy production and use. It defines "energy justice" as a global energy system that fairly distributes both the benefits and costs of energy services, and one that contributes to more representative and inclusive energy decision-making. Such an assessment brings together core understandings of distributional and procedural justice alongside cosmopolitan interpretations of equity and recognitional notions of fairness. The presentation then focuses on six new frontiers or fruitful areas of future research. First is making the case for the involvement of non-Western justice theorists. Second is expanding beyond humans to look at the Rights of Nature or non-anthropocentric notions of justice. Third is focusing on cross-scalar issues of justice such as embodied emissions. Fourth is identifying business models and the co-benefits of justice. Fifth is better understanding the tradeoffs within energy justice principles. Sixth is confronting utopian or falsely constructed justice discourses. It argues in favor of "justice-aware" energy planning and policymaking, and it hopes that its (reconsidered) energy justice conceptual framework offers a critical tool to inform decision-making and future research programs.
