- 10:00 AM3hLaw School Staff - Team Building and Communication WorkshopWe here at UConn PD believe a safe community begins with cooperation and a deeply held belief that we can work together to solve the issues we face. Communication, cooperation, planning, empathy, and respect are just a few of the elements that a community needs to be safe and thrive. To this end, we are proud to offer an immersive Teambuilding and Communication Workshop that allows participants to explore and learn both as individuals and as a group. These workshops feature a variety of games and group initiative projects that are specifically designed to allow participants to explore their group and themselves. Focus is placed on problem solving, interpersonal and group communication skills, leadership traits, organizational processes, adventurous daring-do, productive silliness and more. One of the core concepts of experiential learning is challenge of choice. We learn most when we step outside of our comfort zones, but positively reinforced learning stops when we enter a panic zone. All of the activities we include in our program are structured and sequenced in a manner that allows participants to learn and grow while acknowledging that each element of every activity might not be for every individual. We will encourage everyone to participate past their comfort zone and into an area of true exploration while empowering participants to help guide their own adventure.

- 11:30 AM1hODI Coffee Break - Open to AllThe Office for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite faculty and staff to pause and be in community with us as they are able. - 1:30 PM2h 30mPresentation by Yarran Hominh (Bard College)Understanding Unfreedom Much political philosophy theorizes ideals of justice, freedom, equality. But our current world is in many ways not ideal. When we look around us, we see injustice, unfreedom, inequality. These phenomena do not merely seem temporary blips on our way toward achieving ideals. They seem, instead, relatively permanent features of our world. What might a political philosophy look like that began from those phenomena, from the shape of our existing world? Beginning from unfreedom, I argue, directs philosophical theorizing toward a) explanation of the forces that keep things as they are, and b) imagination of how things might be changed, through c) the exercise of collective agency. Political philosophy in this way becomes more closely connected to issues in moral psychology and to existential questions about the relation of human beings to each other and to the world.

This talk focuses on a group of Native Americans who were enslaved and sent to English Tangier in the 1670s. - 4:00 PM1hStatistics Colloquium: Babette Brumback, Professor Emerita, University of FloridaInteresting Statistical Lessons in Providing Real World Evidence that theensoETMDevice Protects the Esophagus from Thermal Injury During Radiofrequency Ablation Presented by Babette Brumback, PhD Professor Emerita, Department of Biostatistics University of FloridaDate: Wednesday, September 25, 2024,4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=mb47bfc6fb38cd27d1158ff4f92a68018)Thermal injury to the esophagus can lead to a life-threatening complication, called atrial-esophageal fistula, after ablation for atrial fibrillation. TheensoETMdevice (Attune Medical, Chicago, IL, USA) is routinely used to control body temperature in at risk patients in an intensive care setting and in patients whose body temperature must be lowered to protect an injured brain. As it does this by warming or cooling the lumen of the esophagus and stomach, physicians hypothesized that it could also protect the esophagus during radiofrequency (RF) ablation. In an effort toprovide real world evidence in support of this hypothesis, we were tasked with analyzing two separate datasets. The first compares incidences of atrial-esophageal fistula prior to versussubsequent tointroduction of theensoETMwithin several medical centers. The second includes three randomized controlled studies of RF ablation with and without theensoETM. In the first, we must choose an analysis thataccomodatessurprising data in the post-introduction period. In the second, data from one center leads to a statistically significant difference, whereasdata from the other two do not. The primary analysis combined data across centers andfailed toshow a difference. However, greater RF ablation time was associated with greater thermal injury, and it also differed across center. Including RF ablation time, which has the status of a potential mediator because it is a post-treatment variable, as an effect modifier presents a different picture of the combined data, and it illustrates some of the challenges of working with an ordinal outcome that is non-zero for only 29 of 166 patients in the combined data. Finally, we present two ways to handle confounders in an analysis that compares efficacy of the ablation with and without theensoETM.

A policy expert, writer, and co-founder of the non-profit think tank Urban Ocean Lab, Dr. Johnson is focused on solutions to the climate crisis. Her latest book, "What If We Get it Right?: Visions of Climate Futures," will be released in September. Along the beautiful and poignant backdrop of the Connecticut coastline, Dr. Johnson will explore our relationship with the ocean in conversation with TNC's Sally McGee, director of climate and strategic initiatives for TNC's Global Aquaculture Program. NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Rachael Jay will attend the conversation as moderator. People have an enormous impact on water. But oceans are affecting people too, often much more than we realize. Let's define the future for oceans and people. Join Dr. Johnson and TNC for this important moment in nature's story.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: Stirling's formula, by Matt Lamoureux (UConn)The factorials \(n! = 1 \cdot 2 \cdot 3 \cdots n\), which count how many ways \(n\) objects can be arranged, show up anywhere that rearrangements have to be counted, such as combinatorics, probability, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics. The numbers \(n!\) grow very rapidly, e.g., 100! has 158 digits. For applications in chemistry, \(n!\) may occur for \(n\) on the order of Avogadro's number (about \(6.02 \times 10^{23}\)), for which an exact factorial calculation is out of the question. When exact values are computationally inaccessible, it's natural to seek approximations to the values. Stirling's formula is the standard way to estimate \(n!\) when \(n\) is large. In this talk we will see what Stirling's formula is and how to derive it using tools from calculus.Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
