- All dayApply to Become a Pepper ScholarThe Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) at UConn (P30 AG067988; Kuchel, Fortinsky - MPIs) is one of fifteen such centers throughout the United States funded by the National Institute on Aging at NIH. "Pepper Centers" honor Claude D. Pepper, the late Congressman who advocated for senior health and research to enable older adults to maintain or restore their independence. The overarching goal of the OAIC (Pepper) Program is to enhance function and independence in older adults through research. The UConn Pepper Center is pioneering a theme focused on Precision Gerontology, an approach to aging research and the care of older adults that seeks to render interventions enhancing function and independence more effective through an improved understanding of heterogeneity and more precise targeting (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/). A key component of all Pepper Centers is the Research Education Component (REC), which provides financial support, education, and training to Pepper Scholars who Pepper Center leadership identify as showing particular promise as independent investigators. The REC at the UConn Pepper Center, led by Dr. David Steffens and Dr. George Kuchel, includes senior research leaders at UConn and Jackson Lab who could serve as mentors to Pepper Scholars (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/research-and-education-component-rec/). A mentored research project is a primary focus of being a REC Scholar. We are issuing this solicitation to early stage faculty with an interest in aging-related research. Individuals with experience in this area are encouraged to apply, as are those with research backgrounds in non-aging related fields whose research might be enhanced with a new aging focus. Physician scientists and clinicians in other disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. We anticipate funding two new UConn Pepper Scholars through this competition. Funding for two Pepper Scholar positions would begin July 1, 2025. Pepper Scholar awards are typically awarded for one year, with a second year of funding based on evidence of progress and need. Since this award is taking place in year 5 of the current UConn Pepper Center funding cycle, a year 2 Pepper Scholar Award will also be contingent upon the parent grant's successful competitive renewal. The overall goals of the Pepper Center are focused on improving function and independence among older adults. As such the following criteria for Pepper Scholar Selection were developed to be consistent with these goals: • Trainee potential and commitment to an academic career • Demonstrated commitment to aging research • Alignment of proposed training and work with the broader mission of the NIA OAIC Pepper Center Program and the focus on UConn Pepper Center on Precision Gerontology • Availability and commitment of suitable mentorship • Ability to benefit from OAIC resources As an initial step prior to submitting a full Pepper Scholar application, we are requesting that potential candidates submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), due by 5 PM on January 17, 2025. The LOI should be one single-spaced page consisting of two paragraphs. The first paragraph should highlight aspects of the candidate's educational, training, and research background that are most relevant to the Pepper Scholar program, followed by a statement of how the candidate will benefit from the Pepper Scholars program. The second paragraph should include a brief description of the research project that will be supported by the Pepper Center REC. In addition to the LOI, candidates should submit either an NIH Biosketch (preferred) or a CV. The LOI and Biosketch/CV should be addressed to Dr. David Steffens, REC Core Leader and Dr. George Kuchel, REC Core Co-Leader, and emailed to Ms. Laura Masi at masi@uchc.edu Selected candidates will then be notified by January 31, 2025 and invited to submit a full application for the Pepper Scholar Program for a March 28, 2025 deadline.

- 11:00 AM1hActuarial Science Seminar, Axiomatic characterizations of some simple risk-sharing rules, Emil Valdez (UConn)Abstract: In this paper, we present axiomatic characterizations of some simple risk-sharing (RS) rules, such as the uniform, the mean-proportional and the covariance-based linear RS rules. These characterizations make it easier to understand the underlying principles behind how risks are distributed under these simple rules. Such principles typically include maintaining some degree of anonymity regarding participants' data and incident-specific data, adopting non-punitive processes and ensuring the equitability of risk sharing. By formalizing key concepts of reshuffling property, source-anonymous contributions and aggregated contributions, along with their generalizations, we develop a comprehensive framework that expresses these principles clearly and defines the relevant rules. To illustrate, we demonstrate that the uniform RS rule, a simple mechanism in which risks are shared equally, is the only RS rule that satisfies both the reshuffling property and source-anonymous contributions. These straightforward axiomatic characterizations serve as a foundation for exploring similar principles in two other broader classes of risk-sharing rules for which we baptize the $q$-proportional RS rules and the $(q_1,q_2)$-based linear RS rules. Furthermore, this framework allows us to introduce novel particular RS rules, such as the scenario-based RS rules. This is joint work with Jan Dhaene and Rodrigue Kazzi, both from KU Leuven. Speaker's bio: Emil is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (https://www.soa.org/member/) and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (http://www.wisc.edu/) in Madison. - 1:30 PM1hRevitalizing Your Academic Program's Assessment Plan: Strategies for Continuous ImprovementUndergraduate programs identified their learning objectives, mapped courses and assessment measures to these objectives, and developed the assessment plans for reporting and reflecting on student learning. As programs implement their assessment plan, some programs identify challenges, whether that is the objectives not representing the program as well as expected or the courses do not map strongly to the objectives or course assessments do not measure the objectives or the plan is not feasible or sustainable. In this interactive session, Diego Valente will discuss strategies for giving your objectives, maps, assessment alignments, data collection, and assessment process a refresh based on the program's experience. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences in order to strategize how to address challenges. In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, maintaining an effective and relevant assessment plan is crucial for ensuring program quality and student success. This one-hour workshop, led by Senior Academic Program Assessment Fellow expert Diego Valente, offers a comprehensive approach to refreshing your academic program's assessment strategy. Many undergraduate programs have established learning objectives, mapped courses, and developed assessment plans. However, as these plans are implemented, challenges often emerge: - Learning objectives may no longer accurately represent the program - Course mappings may reveal weak alignments with objectives - Assessment measures may inadequately capture student learning - Plans may prove unsustainable or impractical in practice This interactive session will equip participants with practical strategies to address these common issues and revitalize their assessment plans. Key topics include:Re-evaluating and refining program learning objectives Strengthening course-to-objective mapping Aligning assessments with learning objectives Enhancing data collection methods Streamlining the assessment process for sustainability By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:Identify areas for improvement in their current assessment plans Apply strategies to realign learning objectives with program goals Develop more effective course-to-objective mappings Design assessments that accurately measure intended learning outcomes Implement efficient and sustainable assessment processes Whether you're facing specific assessment hurdles or simply seeking to enhance your program's evaluation methods, this workshop offers valuable insights and practical solutions for giving your assessment plan the refresh it needs. Join us to ensure your academic program's assessment strategy remains robust, relevant, and aligned with your educational goals.Registration link:https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3263 (https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffins.uconn.edu%2Fsecure_inst%2Fworkshops%2Fworkshop_view.php%3Fser%3D3263&data=05%7C02%7Cstacey.valliere%40uconn.edu%7C29f3668fe19444f44e4e08dcfa803581%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C638660675783931323%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=9lQurAPUFKU%2FT7N%2FsDdjDsezy017TEO%2BbvGnU7c0oJg%3D&reserved=0)

- 3:00 PM1hBarbershopBarbershop The "Barbershop Group" is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the "Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model"- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at "The Shop".To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

- 3:30 PM1hAtomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics SeminarProf. Luca Argenti, University of Central FloridaASTRA: A Transition-Density-Matrix Approach to Time-Resolved Molecular Ionization Attosecond science, which investigates the time-resolved correlated motion of electrons in atoms, molecules, and solids, is rapidly advancing toward larger molecular systems and more complex processes, such as multiple ionization and molecular fragmentation. Theoretical methods capable of addressing both multiple excitations and photofragment entanglement are essential to capture these phenomena. Among the most promising theoretical approaches are ab initio wave-function-based close-coupling (CC) methods, increasingly adopted by the AMO community. Despite significant progress from codes like XCHEM [1,2], tRecX [3], RMT [4], and UKRmol+ [5], scaling remains a major challenge – whether in handling ionic correlation, accounting for many atoms, or for distant fragments. To address these limitations, we developed ASTRA [6] (AttoSecond TRAnsitions), an ab initio CC molecular ionization code based on high-order transition density matrices between correlated ionic states of arbitrary multiplicity [7], and hybrid Gaussian-B-spline integrals [5,9]. ASTRA integrates multiple state-of-the-art codes, such as DALTON [8], a general-purpose quantum chemistry code, LUCIA [7], a large-scale CI code, and GBTOlib [5], a hybrid integral library suited for slow photoelectrons and comparatively small molecules. ASTRA has successfully reproduced total and partial photoionization cross sections, photoemission asymmetry parameters, and molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions for molecules such as N 2 , CO, H 2 CO, and Pyrazine, showing excellent agreement with existing benchmarks. Currently, ASTRA is being applied to study attosecond transient absorption spectra of CO and O 2 , as well as sequential XUV-pump IR-probe ionization of C 2 H 4 . Its formalism naturally extends to molecular double ionization and can efficiently model electron exchange between multiple disjoint molecular fragments − relevant for describing ionization in weakly bound clusters like (H 2 O) n . Looking ahead, continued integration with tools tailored to high-energy photoemission, non-adiabatic nuclear dynamics, and strong fields ionization will be critical for addressing emerging challenges in ultrafast many-body dynamics. Free-electron lasers enable time-resolved studies of core ionization, while table-top attosecond pump-probe experiments are targeting increasingly larger molecules, monitoring both electron dynamics and nuclear rearrangements throughout chemical reactions with intense probe pulses [10]. To reproduce these complex experiments, we are collaborating with NIST to replace GBTOlib with a more efficient hybrid library capable of handling larger molecules and higher orbital angular momenta. We are also pairing ASTRA with surface-hopping methods [11], where multiphoton ionization is typically not available. Additionally, to track the asymptotic evolution of weakly coupled photofragments under strong light fields − without incurring prohibitive computational costs − we are considering integrating separate optimized propagators for each fragment, which will open the door for us to simulate strong-field multichannel molecular-ionization processes.
