There is a modular curve \(X_G\) which loosely parametrizes elliptic curves whose image of the Galois representation lies in \(G\). In this talk, we give a classification of modular curves of low genus; this is achieved by studying twists of modular curves. We also describe an algorithm for computing all families of modular curves of a fixed genus and for computing explicit models for them.

- 1:30 PM1h 30mPeer Observer Training at UConn HartfordCETL peer observer training is intended to support good practices when colleagues observe each other for evaluative purposes as part of their Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (ATE). The expectation is that participants have worked through a training module at their own pace ( a 2-4hr effort, part 1). Registration before 4/28/25 is needed to gain access to the material and have enough time to complete this first step. Part 2 is the in-person synchronous meeting to discuss and calibrating against each other. As a reminder CETL staff only provides observations for developmental purposes (confidential) and does not offer this service (or any reports) for evaluative purpose, including PTR. Participants receive: Access to the online resources and tools Process guidance to support colleagues A letter of training completion for their documentation Register - https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3465 (https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3465)

- 2:00 PM1h 30mCondensed Matter Physics SeminarDr. Jacob Pettine, MITTuning the properties of quantum materials through nanostructured symmetries Fine-tuning interactions and quantum phenomena in materials has been a longstanding challenge, with recent advances in stacked and twisted van der Waals crystals as well as light-driven transient phases. Yet intrinsic lattice symmetries still fundamentally constrain the phases that can be accessed in these systems. The ability to further design these symmetries therefore represents an exciting frontier for controlling both the static properties and ultrafast responses of quantum materials. Although directly engineering the atomic lattice remains a significant challenge, we can nevertheless nudge the symmetries of a material through high-precision nanostructuring, despite the apparent disparity in spatial scales. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress in this direction, including tuning electronic structure via two-dimensional superlattice strain on ultra-fine lithographic arrays and the direct patterning of thin crystals to induce symmetry-tailored dynamical strain fields through ultrafast nano-acoustic modes. Special attention will be given to the photocurrent responses that emerge in centrosymmetric materials such as graphene when patterned with symmetry-broken metasurfaces. These hybrid systems enable nearly arbitrary control over nanoscale vectorial current and provide a novel local probe of electronic anisotropy. Upon ultrafast excitation, they also act as efficient sources of tunable terahertz vector radiation, simultaneously probing the collective material dynamics.Pettine, J. et al. - 4:00 PM1hTrevor Harris, Assistant Professor, UConn, Localized Conformal Inference for Operator ModelsLocalized Conformal Inference for Operator Models Trevor Harris, Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics, University of ConnecticutDate: Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 4:00 PM, AUST 202Meeting Link: Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m045f4bb27dd8d4ac9260a55e8423fb83)Coffee will be served at3:30in theNoetherLounge (AUST 326)Abstract: Operator models are regression algorithms between spaces of functions and have become key tools for learning large-scale dynamical systems. Recent advances in deep neural operators have significantly improved the accuracy and scalability of operator modeling. However, these models lack a built-in mechanism for predictive uncertainty quantification (UQ). In this work, we propose a general framework for UQ in operator models based on randomized local conformal inference and infimum depths. We show that our method achieves exact marginal coverage across a broad range of localizers, depth notions, and projection classes. Additionally, we introduce a sampling scheme to approximate prediction sets in real space and show that these sets are highly adaptive and effectively control coverage risk in both synthetic and real-world scenarios. Compared to existing baseline UQ methods for operator models, our approach yields tighter coverage and narrower, more adaptive prediction sets that better respond to variations in the residual distribution.Short Bio: Trevor Harris is an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Statistics. He was previously an assistant professor at Texas A&M University before joining UConn in 2024. His research is in scientific machine learning, black box uncertainty quantification, operator modeling and functional data analysis, and causal impact analysis. Current projects include non-exchangeable conformal inference, climate model emulation and integration with observational data, large scale granger causal testing, and forecasting West Nile virus. Past research includes work in functional anomaly detection, change point detection, and robust nonparametric hypothesis testing.
