- All dayUConn Older Americans Independence Center (Pepper Center) Funding OpportunityThe UConn Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (i.e., UConn Pepper Center), plans to submit an application for competitive renewal to the National Institute on Aging at NIH. At this time, the UConn Pepper Center Pilot/Exploratory Studies Core (PESC) seeks letters of intent (LOIs) for studies to be included in the application. Studies selected for inclusion in the application will be funded contingent upon continued funding of the UConn Pepper Center. We are seeking Letters of Intent (LOIs) for 1-year pilot and exploratory studies that focus on enhancing function and independence in older adults while also advancing knowledge in the UConn Pepper Center theme of Precision Gerontology, and that will support future grant applications. We welcome a variety of research approaches, ranging from biological to clinical/behavioral to health services/community-based research. Projects focusing on cognition and behavior, host defense and immunity, voiding and continence, and mobility and falls are of particular interest. For proposed studies involving human subjects research, secondary data analysis-based projects are encouraged. Projects involving primary data collection are allowed but must be sufficiently feasible to complete within 1 year. LOIs are due by September 10, 2025 Full-time UConn and JAX faculty are eligible to apply for PESC funding. Priority will be given to junior faculty/early-stage investigators as well as established investigators pursuing aging-related research (relevant to Precision Gerontology) as a new area of research. Investigators may request up to $50,000 (direct costs) for a 1-year pilot project. Those interested in submitting an LOI are strongly encouraged to contact the PESC Co-Leaders Dr. Lisa Barry (libarry@uchc.edu) Dr. Blanka Rogina (rogina@uchc.edu) and to visit the UConn Pepper Center website to learn more about the theme of Precision Gerontology and the UConn Pepper Center Research Resource Cores. https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/ Those seeking to apply for UConn PESC funding must submit the following by September 10, 2025: 1. A 1-page Letter of Intent (LOI) that includes:Brief description of the Specific Aims, Significance, and Approach; Statement as to how the proposed study aligns with the UConn Pepper Center theme of Precision Gerontology; Statement of how the proposed study will utilize applicable UConn Pepper Center Research Resource Cores. 2. On a separate page, a brief budget and timeline 3. NIH Biosketch for Principal Investigator. Please send LOIs to Ms. Laura Masi (masi@uchc.edu) Individuals selected to submit full proposals will be notified by the PESC Co-Leaders.

- 9:00 AM1hDoctoral Dissertation Oral Proposal, Zijie PanAbstract:Multivariate time series (MTS) analysis is critical for modeling complex temporal systems in many range of real-world domains, including finance, healthcare, and climate science. However, the high dimensionality, evolving dependencies, and non-stationary dynamics of MTS data pose significant challenges for building robust and generalizable forecasting models. Traditional statistical and deep learning methods for time series forecasting have largely focused on modeling temporal signals, often overlooking the knowledge that could improve model forecasting accuracy and adaptability. To bridge this gap, we propose knowledge informed time series analysis. The first work explores the external structural knowledge that captures the inter-variable relationships for continual multivariate time series forecasting. In dynamic temporal systems where the inter-variate dependencies shift as new regimes emerge, our method effectively guides the model to identify and leverage structural knowledge for time series forecasting. By selectively replaying informative samples from the learned representation space, the model memorizes previously learned knowledge, maintaining strong forecasting performance across both past and newly encountered regimes. Recent efforts have explored the use of large language models (LLMs) for time series forecasting, in our second approach, we leverage the semantic knowledge embedded in their pre-trained spaces for time series forecasting via a cross-modal prompt learning framework. Our approach first tokenizes decomposed time series components into semantically meaningful patches, creating embeddings aligned with LLM token spaces. We then select semantic anchors and align them with time series embeddings by maximizing their cosine similarity in a shared representation space. These aligned anchors serve as dynamic prompts, conditioning the model to better handle diverse temporal patterns. Through extensive experiments on benchmark datasets, we show that our framework not only surpasses state-of-the-art baselines but also have the improved interpretability.Beyond the current exploration of structural and semantic knowledge in multivariate time series, we aim to further investigate RAG enhanced time series foundation models and cross-modal knowledge integration to advance time series analysis.

- 12:30 PM1hWhat Is a Rubric?Rubrics are an assessment tool that promote consistent and reduced bias grading. helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. They are designed to help students understand what is at stake in an assignment, what to work toward, and how they will be assessed. For instructors, rubrics can serve as feedback on assignments, focus revisions, and motivate students to improve. This introductory workshop explores the elements of a rubric, methods for developing effective rubrics, and how to apply them within your courses.August 27, 12:30-1:30 Register - https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3520 (https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3520)

- 3:00 PM1hTeaching International Relations in 2025: A Global Panel DiscussionIn this contemporary moment, International Relations, undoubtedly, faces an era of unprecedented crises. Some global problems persist, but new ones are also afoot. Together, they pose challenges to state security, international inequalities, global trade, the liberal international order, the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and structures of global governance. How do these problems and challenges impact the teaching of International Relations? In a context in which academic institutions and academic freedom also face threats across the world, we invite you to a roundtable that takes up the pedagogic challenges of teaching IR in the current moment. The roundtable is organized around two central questions: (1) What parts of the IR curriculum are enduring and what require radical revision? (2) What kinds of classroom pedagogies are most effective in this moment for generating analytical and critical thinking among diverse students? Join the Pedagogy Conference Planning Committee in this conversation with teacher-scholars based in 4 continents for a truly global discussion. MODERATOR: Ajay Parasam (Dalhousie University, Canada). PANELIST: Elia Elisa Cia Alves (Federal University of Paraiba, Brazil), Devon Cantwell-Chavez (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Jonneke Kooman (Willamette University, USA), Kate Schick (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealandand), and Claire Timperley (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand).
