ANNOUNCING THE CWP-STORRS UPCOMING TEACHER-WRITER RETREAT AT TRINITY RETREAT CENTER The CWP-Storrs has been successfully providing writers retreats for teachers since 1990. Our retreats offer educators the opportunity to devote time to their writing, share feedback, network, and learn from other writers. DATES: Friday, November 7 to Sunday, November 9 SCHEDULE: Friday night: Check-in any time after 4 p.m. Dinner at 6:00 p.m.. After-dinner free time. Saturday: Breakfast at 8 a.m. Independent work until lunch at noon. Optional outing or small group seminar after lunch. Dinner at 6:00 p.m. Evening celebratory read-around. There are lovely hiking trails on the property, so bring sturdy shoes if plan on going hiking. Sunday: Meals at 8 a.m. and noon. The Connecticut Writing Project (CWP) sponsors Connecticut Student Writers (CSW), a magazine established in 1987 by the CWP to honor excellence in writing by students from kindergarten through high school. Enjoy this unique exhibition of rock music memorabilia from the archive of editor, journalist, and radio disc jockey Ken Best. This personal collection features decades worth of iconic photos, album covers, posters and promotional materials that Best has amassed while writing about music for newspapers in New Jersey and Connecticut and interviewing musicians and authors on the radio at WPKN in Bridgeport and WHUS in Storrs. Highlighted will be 50 photos of major rock 'n' roll figures by Connecticut photographer Joseph Sia, including his famous image of Jimi Hendrix at Woolsey Hall in New Haven in 1968, known as "The Shadow," from Best and Sia's 1992 book,Eight Days a Week: An Illustrated Record of Rock 'n' Roll (Pomegranate Books).

Create an account at Scholastic How to Enter to enter your work to the 2025 Scholastic Awards. Note you will need the email address of a parent or guardian. Create and Upload Your Work. The Scholastic Awards looks for work that demonstrates originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. After you create your work, you can upload it to your Scholastic Awards Account. Once you have logged in, follow the instructions to upload all of your entries into the system. Every category has specific requirements so please read the Copyright & Plagiarism Guidelines and Category Descriptions carefully. Note that you will need your educator's email address. Pay for Your Work. After uploading your work, you will be prompted to pay for your entry through Stripe. The cost for an individual entry is $10 and a portfolio is $30. Please note fee waivers are available for teens who express that the fee poses a barrier to participation.

This course consists of eight online modules that the student can complete independently. An instructor will meet virtually with the students weekly to review each module topic and answer questions. Expect to spend study time reviewing each module topic outside of the review class. A student who completes all the modules, works through the quizzes, and studies the resource materials independently should be able to pass both the written and oral state exam successfully.

All workshops are held for 6 hours virtually (on Teams), and open to all (both affiliates and non-affiliates of UConn). The UConn Western Team is scheduled to host a show on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Horsebarn Hill Arena in Storrs, CT. Through UConn's Office of Veterans Affairs and Military Programs proceeds will provide scholarships for military and veteran students as well as benefit the Kyle Milliken Fund. Kyle Milliken story (https://kylemilliken.org/). Join UConn Rec in a salute to service! The rolling courses explore campus and the rural Mansfield-Storrs area, with 10K runners tackling the infamous Bonemill loop. The challenging Bonemill course has long been a proving ground for runners and athletes at UConn. We encourage participants to run or ruck "Bonemill" in honor of Kyle Milliken, Navy SEAL and UConn track and field athlete who was killed in action. Runners and walkers are both welcome in the 5K, which offers a taste of everything in the local area. The fitness walk is an untimed mile through the heart of campus. All courses will pass by the Ultimate Sacrifice Memorial on the Great Lawn where a Blackhawk helicopter will land during the race! Event participants will earn long sleeve technical shirts and enjoy post-race festivities taking place outside the UConn Student Recreation Center.Kids Fun Run: Bring the whole family and enjoy the kids run with options of a ¼ mile or ½ mile (for kids ages 2-11)!

The University of Connecticut Percussion Ensemble is an integral part of the percussion program. The ensemble strives to bring relevant and exciting compositions for percussion to the UConn stage. Both undergraduate and graduate percussion majors perform in the ensemble as it serves to strengthen students' musical and technical abilities on all percussion instruments. The members develop skills in the chamber ensemble that will serve them in many aspects of performing, creating and teaching music. The ensemble plays a wide variety of repertoire from various periods and countries. Students play a myriad of instruments that range from triangle to timpani to table-tops. Audiences find that percussion literature, although sometimes unfamiliar, has widespread appeal. The UConn percussion ensemble performs throughout the academic year and has been featured in various off-campus events.

The 17-piece Jazz Lab Band is designed to function as a feeder system, training and developing students to climb the ranks from the Lab Band to the Jazz Ensemble. In rehearsals, the Lab Band focuses on sight-reading and repertoire chosen to teach and reinforce the stylistic nuances of big band jazz. A wide range of music is performed, including pieces by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Bill Holman, Bob Mintzer, and new works by the ensemble's director.

Opera Outreach & Scenes provides many performing opportunities for students involved. Those enrolled stage several junior operas and visit various local schools to perform for children and teach them about opera. This course is also comprised of a robust scenes program. A scenes recital occurs each semester in which students perform scenes and excerpts from various operas, operettas, and musicals.

Prospective Holster Scholars Program applicants are invited to an application workshop/writing retreat in advance of the fall application deadline. The Holster Scholars Program will provide light refreshments. Program coordinator Dr. Vin Moscardelli and past Holster Scholars will be on hand to answer questions and provide feedback. This is a "drop in" writing retreat designed to provide a quiet, dedicated space for prospective applicants to make progress on their applications ahead of the deadline. There will not be a formal program or presentation, nor do you have to stay the entire time.   Preregistration not required.
