- 12:30 PM1h"Disastrous Nation: Hurricanes, Relief, and the Formation of the US-Caribbean Borderlands"Looking back to the aftermath of the 1928 San Felipe II/Okeechobee hurricane in Puerto Rico and Florida shows how early twentieth century discourses around relief and humanitarianism still exist today in the aftermaths of storms such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Maria, among others. This talk ultimately seeks to examine how these discourses emerged and how they continue to shape recovery periods in the contemporary moment. The delayed recovery processes in 1928 Puerto Rico and Florida speak to the unique vulnerabilities of their most affected communities, an uncomfortable similarity with twenty-first century natural disasters. The 1928 hurricane reveals how these storms continue to shape both Puerto Rico and Florida and by extension the Caribbean and the US South physically, economically, and culturally. This is an Honors Event. Categories: "Academic & Interdisciplinary Engagement","Multiculturalism & Global Citizenship" #UHL10930

Sometimes, it is just the process of doing something creative that is enjoyable, rather than the finished result. This is what creative mindfulness is all about. The Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) in collaboration with UConn MFA International Student, Afra Hassan Pour, are hosting a series of CreativeMindfulness Workshops. The meetings aspire to provide a space for all international students to come together, have a moment of mindfulness, wind down and create. Art supplies, snacks, and coffee & tea will be provided. All skill and creative levels are welcome!
