- Apr 162:00 PMCondensed Matter Physics SeminarProf. Gregory A. Fiete, Northeastern UniversityNonlinear optical probing and control of magnetic and electronic quantum geometry Illuminating a material with light can reveal both interesting aspects of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom, as well as drive phase and topological transitions in the material itself. In this talk, I will focus on three distinct responses of a material to light: (1) Nonlinear phononic control of magnetism in bilayer CrI , MnBi Te , and MnSb Te. (2) The non-linear photogalvanic response of Weyl semimetals with tilted cones and chiral charge up to 4 (the largest allowed in a lattice model), as well as the topological superconductor candidate 4Hb-TaS , and (3) The coupling of phonons to electronic degrees of freedom to produce chiral phonons with large g factors of order 1, which can be measured with Raman scattering. I will discuss how these nonlinear responses are related to the underlying quantum geometry of the Bloch states and present a perspective on interesting frontiers in out-of-equilibrium quantum materials.

(https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/mental-health/group-therapy/)Interpersonal Group for Graduate Students Graduate Students Interpersonal Groups focuses on promoting emotional wellbeing as you balance academics, relationships, family, and personal responsibilities. Groups offer a supportive confidential space to share your concerns, practice skills and get feedback. To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700 (tel:+18604864705) This session is held by Carlos- Gonzalez- Martinez, LCSW (https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/person/carlos-gonzalez-martinez/) For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.
- Apr 163:00 PMDiscovery Leadership Certification SeriesThis nine-week program introduces students to opportunities for leadership at UConn and beyond. Students will develop their leadership competencies through self-reflection, experiential learning, exploration of team dynamics, communication, and cultural competence. As a result of this experience, University of Connecticut Discovery Students will understand the basic concepts and principles of leadership, explore, define, and develop personal values, and begin to take an active role in positively influencing the university community and beyond.

- Apr 163:00 PMWriting Center Workshop: Grant WritingPlease RSVP by Tuesday, April 15 using this link (https://writingcenter.uconn.edu/graduate-writing-workshop-series/). Registrants will receive a Webex invite prior to the event. Grant funding is essential for advancing research even as these opportunities become increasingly difficult to win. A competitive landscape and high demand for projects that align with the grant funders aims makes grant writing skills and best practices all the more essential. This Writing Center Workshop seeks to help guide graduate students of all disciplines through this process. For this event, we are excited to welcome the expertise of Anna Gault Galjan from the Office of the Vice President for Research.
