- 4:00 PM2hWebs and Tableaux, by Chinmay Dharmendra and Ben GrantIn the representation theory of Lie groups (or the representation theory of their corresponding Lie algebras), diagrammatic methods have often proven to be very useful for computational purposes. One particularly successful example in this direction is the description of invariant subspaces of \(m{SL}_3\)-representations using certain bipartite planar graphs embedded in the disk called "\(m{SL}_3\)-webs." In the late nineties, Kuperberg introduced webs in order to describe the invariant subspaces of \(m{SL}_3\)-representations and provided a particularly nice family of bases for invariant subspaces using "non-elliptic" \(m{SL}_3\)-webs. These web bases satisfy the additional property of being invariant under rotation of the disk. Despite these rotation-invariant \(m{SL}_3\)-web bases being well-known for nearly 30 years, however, it has until recently been an open problem to provide rotation-invariant web bases for \(m{SL}_4\)-invariants, and this problem is still open for \(m{SL}_r\) with \(r\geq5\). The problem of finding rotation-invariant \(m{SL}_4\)-web bases was solved by Gaetz, Pechenik, Pfannerer, Striker, and Swanson in 2023, building on the work of Patrias in 2017, who described a bijection between non-elliptic \(m{SL}_3\)-webs and combinatorial objects called "generalized oscillating tableaux." Under her bijection, rotation of webs corresponds rather miraculously to the well-studied operation of promotion on tableaux. In this inaugural Graduate Collaboration Seminar, we will present our understanding of this current area of active research in algebraic combinatorics as well as the connections between the underlying combinatorics of webs and tableaux. We intend to focus mainly on the case of \(m{SL}_3\)-webs, but time permitting we may take a visit to the newer \(m{SL}_4\) story.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: The separating powers trick, by Georgia Harbor-Collins (UConn)The study of integer solutions to polynomial equations in two or more unknowns is a topic that goes back to ancient times. With Diophantus' book 'Arithmetica' (c. 270 A.D.) inspiring the likes of Fermat, these so-called Diophantine equations paved the way to modern day number theory. We will see how the integer solutions to these equations can sometimes be determined by factoring part of the equation in a way that reveals a hidden structure. Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.

- 5:30 PM2hReception and panel discussion for LIS exhibitThis exhibition brings together the work of fourteen contemporary artists who have engaged with one of the largest tidal estuaries on the Atlantic coast of the United States through their work. The Sound, which stretches from the East River in New York, to the Rhode Island border, covers 1,300 square miles, and is the home to 1,200 species of invertebrates, 120 species of fish, and dozens of migratory birds. Its watershed covers 16,820 square miles and is home to over nine million people. The rich maritime history of the Sound began with Native peoples before European colonization, and continues to the present day, particularly with commercial shell fishing and recreational boating. As much of the art in the exhibition will attest, Long Island Sound is a microcosm of many of the issues that are currently affecting the Earth's environment, including species extinction, plastic pollution, and global warming. The artists included in the exhibition were chosen for their varied approaches to the estuary, revealing the complex and often surprising ways artists have considered the Sound, its history, and its environs. This exhibition, curated by artist, independent curator and writer Richard Klein, was organized following his 2024 residency at Peck's Ledge Lighthouse, sponsored by The Norwalk Art Space. Peck's Ledge Light, built in 1906, is in the Sound, one mile off Norwalk's Calf Pasture Beach.
