Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. - 9:00 AM3hContinuing Education - Adolescent AddictionHistorically mislabeled as a difficult population, this webinar will explore the characteristics of adolescent addiction, the recovery pitfalls, and effective treatment interventions that will engage your young clients. Adolescent Addiction is a distinct problem, with biopsychosocial elements unique to this age group, which indicates there are unique treatment implications. This training explores the unique elements of adolescent addiction and discusses the best ways to both prevent and treat it. While the majority of the training addresses substance use, other addictions – gambling, sex, internet, fitness – will be included. Adolescent Addiction is often guided by cultural, political, and social forces. Adolescents my be judged for wanting attention, submitting to peer pressure, or making "stupid" choices, depending on the culture in which the teen is a member. The degree that the addiction is accepted is often based on these influences. This training includes a discussion of these influences, not only in understanding how teen addiction develops, but also how recovery can be sabotaged or supported by these influences.

- 3:30 PM1hMCB Seminar Series: Dr. Elsio WunderDr. Elsio WunderDVM, PhD, Assistant Professor UConn Pathobiology and Veterinary Science Host: Ken CampelloneLeptospirosis pathogenesis: unveiling a mysterySummary: Leptospirosis, the leading zoonotic disease in morbidity and mortality worldwide, is caused by pathogenic spirochetes belonging to the genus Leptospira. The burden of this neglected disease will continue to rise given the effects of climate change and social inequality, important drivers of disease. The mechanism behind the pathogenesis of leptospiral infection continues to be a major knowledge gap preventing the advance on diagnostic and prevention. Despite recent breakthroughs on the research of this important neglected zoonotic disease, more work is needed to better understand how leptospires can rapidly disseminate, evade host-immune responses, and cause life-threatening disease worldwide. In this talk, Dr. Wunder will show some recent research that their group is working on to try to better understand the mechanisms behind the host-pathogen interactions of this disease, and how this work can influence the development of better tools for diagnostic and prevention.About Dr. Wunder: Dr. Wunder is a trained veterinarian with extensive international research experience, focused on understanding the pathogenesis of leptospirosis with more than 15 years of experience working in leptospirosis research laboratories in veterinary and public health settings. Dr. Wunder's experience has given them an in-depth understanding of the practical research laboratory issues and the challenges in the biology and pathogenesis of this important neglected disease. Their PhD thesis centered on translational research applications to identify leptospiral determinants enabling the bacterium to penetrate and disseminate in the host. As part of this work, Wunder developed and evaluated qPCR-based DNA detection assays for diagnosis and dissemination studies, improved methods for genetic transformation of Leptospira, and developed in-vitro assays that were used to determine the ability of the pathogen to cause infection, like translocation and adherence assays.
