- All dayYIIP - Now Accepting ApplicationsCall for Applications The Young Innovative Investigator Program (YIIP) is a 2-year program of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. In addition, some tuition expenses and fees associated with required graduate level courses are waived. - 3:30 PM1h 15mUCHI Fellow's Talk: Peter ZarrowMy talk "Heritage of Kings: France–England–China–Japan" examines how major heritage sites in four countries shape their views of the past. I focus on palaces and temples associated with the monarchy, suggesting that national identity in each case today is formed partly in relationship to views of the earlier kingdom. I ask whether a comparative approach is useful in understanding how different societies memorialize the past. In theory at least, by highlighting similarities and differences we can determine if there are common patterns in the process of national heritagization and determine what cultural properties are unique to each national culture.Peter Zarrow is professor of History at UConn. His research focuses on modern Chinese thought and culture, and his current project explores national heritage in China and Japan. He is the author of China in War and Revolution, 1895-1949 (2005) and since coming to UConn in 2014 has published Educating China: Knowledge, Society and Textbooks in a Modernizing World, 1902–1937 (2015) and Abolishing Boundaries: Global Utopias in the Formation of Modern Chinese Political Thought, 1880-1940 (2021).Jesse Olsavsky is an assistant professor of History and a co-director of the Gender Studies Initiative at Duke Kunshan University, Jiangsu Province, China. He is a scholar of Abolitionism, Pan-Africanism and their legacies. He is the author of The Most Absolute Abolition: Runaways, Vigilance Committees, and the Rise of Revolutionary Abolitionism, 1835–1861 (2022), which was a finalist for the Harriet Tubman book prize. His research has been supported by such institutions as the Schomburg Center for research in Black Culture, the NEH, the ACLS, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Massachusetts Historical Society. He will spend his fellowship year working on his second book project titled "In The Tradition: The Abolitionist Tradition and the Routes of Pan-Africanism." The project will explore the ways numerous intellectuals and movements in the US, West Africa, and the West Indies, from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, re-invoked and reinterpreted the history of the struggle to abolish slavery during their own struggles for African unity and decolonization. Professor, Department of Computer Science and Statistics, University of Rhode Island Wednesday, January 29, 2025, 4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m33267ff39035de01ef5ab8b9f892a00d)Abstract: The spectral density function can play a key role in time series analysis, where nonparametric interval estimation of the spectral density is a fundamental issue. However, the prevailing pointwise interval methods for spectral densities, including chi-square approximation and frequency domain bootstrap (FDB), can be misleading in practice, perhaps more so than appreciated, as confidence intervals often exhibit low coverage accuracy as well as high sensitivity to tuning parameters. To provide a practical alternative, we propose a new hybrid method that combines the strengths of empirical likelihood (EL) and FDB. The method involves developing an EL statistic for spectral density inference along with a corresponding bootstrap approximation under time dependence, where we allow for general time processes as well as for two different types of kernel smoothing found in application (so-called A- or K-windows). Such windows require differing theories and implementations in practice. As an advantage, the FDB-EL procedure is formally valid under mild conditions for application to a broad range of processes, including both linear and nonlinear time series. Simulation studies demonstrate that FDB-EL-based confidence intervals are effective compared to other methods, as intervals maintain good coverage accuracy while being less sensitive to bandwidth parameters. The confidence interval procedure is illustrated with an application to studying the wind spectrum. Extension to simultaneous confidence intervals has also been discussed.Bio: Mark (Haihan) Yu is an Assistant Professor in Statistics at the University of Rhode Island. His current research focuses on non-parametric inference tools, bootstrap (resampling, subsampling), and empirical likelihood. His goal is to develop user-friendly as well as theoretically compact statistical methods. Besides nonparametric inference, he also has a broad interest in other statistical problems, including time series, change-point problems, model assessment, etc. He obtained his B.Sc. and MPhil in risk management science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his Ph.D. in statistics from Iowa State University.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: Linear algebra over the integers, by Keith Conrad (UConn)In a first linear algebra course, the scalars used in vectors and matrices are real numbers. In this talk we will see how that "classical" situation changes when the scalars are only allowed to be integers. Some properties are the same, but new phenomena appear involving Gaussian elimination, spanning sets and bases, matrix determinants, conjugacy of matrices, and quadratic forms. This talk will assume familiarity with basic linear algebra over the real numbers. Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
