- Apr 312:00 PMHarmony of Nature II: WavesHarmony of Nature II: Waves is an international and experimental collaboration that connects audiences with nature by transforming environmental data into classical music. The exhibition is a multimedia experience of musical compositions, video, and documentary objects. Musical compositions of wavelike gestures were derived from tide gauge observations of sea level rise along the coast of the Long Island Sound, buoy measurements of the propagation of a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean, and mathematical expressions. The specific datasets chosen are direct observations, rather than model projections, and the music expresses the nuances of the flow of nature. Harmony of Nature II: Waves emphasizes the portrayal of physical phenomenon as a generative force, to create music that is both artistically and scientifically communicative. The works were created by the project's trio of members, acclaimed South Korean pianist Sophy Chung, oceanographer Molly M. James, and composer, computer scientist Max Lu.Harmony of Nature II: Waves received support from Connecticut Sea Grant Arts Support Awards Program.

- Apr 312:30 PMAfro-Indigenous Territorial Defense in Nicaragua: Film Screening and DiscussionOn April 3, 2018, a settler started a wildfire in the territory of the Indigenous Rama and Black Kriol peoples in Nicaragua, burning more than 13,000 acres of rainforest in the Indio-Maíz Biological Reserve and setting off nationwide #SOSIndioMaiz protests. Please join us on the seventh anniversary of the fire for an event centering Rama and Kriol resistance. We will begin with a screening of Patrol (2023), a community-collaborative documentary that follows Rama and Kriol communities in Nicaragua as they fight to protect their territory from illegal cattle ranchers and other settlers from colonizing their territory. Filmmakers Camilo de Castro and Brad Allgood accompanied Rama and Kriol forest rangers, Nicaraguan journalists, and a U.S. conservation biologist over the course of seven years as they worked together to document, investigate, and halt this colonization, including by tracing its connections with international business interests. Following the film screening, we will have a panel discussion, Q&A, and group conversations with the film's protagonist, Rama forest ranger Armando John, and exiled Rama and Kriol territorial defenders Lorenzo Martinez, Becky Mc.Cray, and Erick Thomas.

Anders, Ph.D., Kansas State University (https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/ahs/about/people/kanders8/) "Risk Factors for Violence in Sexual and Romantic Relationships across Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: A Call for Research and Action"April 3, 2025 | 12:30 PM | WebExRSVP (https://chip.uconn.edu/inchip-lecture-series-rsvp-kristin-anders/) Dr. Kristin M. Anders's (she/her) research program focuses on the conceptualization of and communication around healthy and unhealthy sexual development in the U.S. Specifically, much of her work focuses on how we capture and communicate about sexuality within relationships–ranging from communication by care providers (e.g., parent-child, healthcare, early childhood educators) to within romantic relationships. Within this research, Kristin studies the use of violence in sexual and romantic relationships across adolescence and emerging adulthood. Specifically, her work has examined risk factors associated with the engagement in sexual violence on college campuses and sexual teen dating violence. She aims to use this research to better inform sexuality research, education, and violence prevention programs, particularly in high schools and colleges. Kristin earned her Ph.D. in Child and Family Studies from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2017. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences at Kansas State University, wherein she is a faculty with both the Human Development and Family Science undergraduate program and Prevention Science graduate program. She currently leads the Sexual Health and Assault Research and Education (SHARE) team and co-leads the Identity Over the Lifespan (IDOL) team with Dr. Anthony Ferraro. Kristin also continues to work with Drs. Michelle Toews and Chelsea Spencer on meta-analytic reviews of sexual and dating violence during the teen and college years which will be highlighted within this presentation.

- Apr 31:00 PMWebinar: Free and Open Source GIS Tools – Part 1 of 2Hosts: UConn CLEAR Speakers: Carl Zimmerman & Ashley Benitez, CT GIS Office This 45-minute introductory presentation is the first in a two-part series on free and open source GIS. It will cover the new and broad ecosystem of GIS and geospatial tools (e.g. viewers, scripting tools and desktop applications), explain how to choose the right tools for your set of uses cases, access public data, and how to conduct simple spatial analyses with QGIS. Attendees will learn about free geospatial software and GIS tools which are widely available, reliable, and powerful. Many have the capabilities of expensive commercial products from the industry leaders. Free tools such as these provide substantial analytic and visualization capabilities to organizations needing location data and visualization solutions such as non-profits, small businesses, land-trusts, and local governments. These tools can be used in conjunction with a variety of public data sets including elevation and parcel data from Connecticut, the federal government, and other entities. We will demonstrate a few of the most relevant capabilities such as analysis, big data visualization, and basic map-making. Register here (https://clear.uconn.edu/2025/02/13/opensource-1/).
