- All day26th Annual Workshop on Computational Cell Biology (Online Format)The 26th Annual Workshop on Computational Cell Biology will take place online on February 24-28, 2025. It is designed to enable cell biologists and biophysicists to develop models of their experimental systems. We will teach how to use VCell (https://vcell.org/ (https://vcell.org/)), COPASI (https://copasi.org/ (https://copasi.org/) ) and SpringSalad (https://vcell.org/ssalad (https://vcell.org/ssalad)) software to develop spatial and non-spatial models using deterministic, stochastic, agent- and rule-based approaches. Please check the websites for extensive tutorials and examples of models. The course includes introductions to VCell, COPASI, and SpringSaLaD, presented by their developers and by modelers. The workshop will include a combination of plenary sessions, invited speakers, and advanced tutorials convenient for audiences across the globe. Participants will have an opportunity to get "hands-on" help developing models in support of their research. Throughout the 5 days, there will be one-on-one sessions with experienced modelers designed to help with your projects. To participate in these sessions, please email the following information to Dr. Michael Blinov blinov@uchc.edu (mailto:blinov@uchc.edu), by January 15, 2025: your name, institution, lab head (if you are a student), and 1-2 page proposal outlining your research project and modeling needs. As a NIH Biomedical Technology Resource, we are charged with supporting NIH-funded research through collaborative projects. Registration is free and will be available later. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. In addition, some tuition expenses and fees associated with required graduate level courses are waived. Upon successful completion of year one, scholars obtain a Graduate Certificate of Research Experience in Biomedical Science. In year two, Scholars who meet the academic qualifications pursue a Master of Science in Biomedical Science involving innovative mentored research. In this book club we will examine teaching effectiveness through the lens of the CTB framework of high-level behaviors that can be adopted and adapted to individual instructor and disciplinary context. More practically, it relies on evidence that can be observed by peers, leans on student feedback, and one's own reflective narrative of teaching effectiveness. Discover equitable and inclusive strategies, participate in productive conversations centered around teaching and learning, and access a toolkit of resources to apply from day one. The book offers a holistic method of documenting and assessing teaching effectiveness by including a variety of evidence and perspectives to both develop teaching skills and demonstrate achievements in promoting student learning. He has been published in peer-reviewed journals, national and international publications, and has been quoted in international news outlets as an expert in his field. - 2:00 PM1h 30mReservoirs of the ImaginaryAbout this Event Reflecting on three key projects from the past 30 years artist Liam Gillick will talk about his work related to subjects as varied as the secret life of Robert McNamara, car production in Sweden in the 1970s, and the impossibility of tragedy as genre on streaming platforms. All his work has in one way or another drawn inspiration from post World War II attempts to create new forms of administration in regard to human relationships. About the SpeakerLiam Gillick works across diverse forms, including installation, video and sound. A theorist, curator and educator as well as an artist, his wider body of work includes published essays and texts, lectures, curatorial and collaborative projects. Gillick's work reflects upon conditions of production in a post-industrial landscape including the aesthetics of economy, labour and social organization. His work exposes the dysfunctional aspects of a modernist legacy in terms of abstraction and architecture when framed within a globalized, neo-liberal consensus, and extends into structural rethinking of the exhibition as a form. He has produced a number of short films since the late 2000s which address the construction of the creative persona in light of the enduring mutability of the contemporary artist as a cultural figure. Margin Time (2012) The Heavenly Lagoon (2013) and Hamilton: A Film by Liam Gillick (2014). The book Industry and Intelligence: Contemporary Art Since 1820 was published by Columbia University Press in March 2016. 

 Gillick's work has been included in numerous important exhibitions including documenta and the Venice, Berlin, Shanghai and Istanbul Biennales - representing Germany in 2009 in Venice. Solo museum exhibitions have taken place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in London. Gillick's work is held in many important public collections including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Bilbao and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Over the last twenty five years Gillick has also been a prolific writer and critic of contemporary art – contributing to Artforum, October, Frieze and e-flux Journal. He is the author of a number of books including a volume of his selected critical writing. High profile public works include the British Government Home Office (Interior Ministry) building in London and the Lufthansa Headquarters in Frankfurt. Throughout this time Gillick has extended his practice into experimental venues and collaborative projects with artists including Philippe Parreno, Lawrence Weiner, Louise Lawler, Adam Pendleton and the band New Order, in a series of concerts in Manchester, Turin and Vienna. - 3:30 PM1h 15mUCHI Fellow's Talk: César Abadia-Barrero on Sugary Industries and the BodyIn 400+ years of history (from early XVII to early XXI centuries) sugar went from being used primarily by the European royalty and their criminal imperial associates to being consumed in large amounts by all inhabitants of the planet. In this talk, I draw from Sidney Mintz's classic Sweetness and Power to briefly present the history of sugar. Then, I update this history by presenting the incredible growth and profits of the sugary drinks and ultra-processed food industries. By asking what has happened to our human biology as we have replaced real food with more free sugars and processed substances, I develop connections with several diseases, primarily diabetes and obesity that have reached pandemic proportions. I present how the efforts to curb down consumption and enforce regulations have been met with strategies to co-opt and influence policy makers, aggressively market their products to vulnerable populations, and fund and promote biased research. By naming some of the capitalists of the largest transnational "food" industries and their enormous wealth and profit rates, and by connecting their business success with the progressive destruction of our biology, this first chapter of a larger book project intends to test if we can present a material history of our deteriorating human biology for broad audiences; a material history that argues that to understand human biology we need to understand the history of capitalism. César Abadía-Barrero is a Colombian activist/scholar and associate professor of anthropology and human rights at the University of Connecticut. His research approach is grounded in activist, collaborative, and participatory action research frameworks and integrates critical perspectives to study interconnections among capitalism, human rights, and communities of care. He has been a member of or collaborated with collectives and social movements in Brazil, Colombia, Cameroon, Spain and the United States examining how for-profit interests transform access, continuity, and quality of health care, and how communities resist forms of oppression and create and maintain alternative ways of living and caring.
