- Nov 2212:15 PMGraduate Student SeminarProf. Vernon Cormier, Department of Physics, University of ConnecticutPhysics of Earth's Core Among the terrestrial planets, Earth has the largest magnetic field, driven by convective motion in an electrically conducing iron rich liquid outer core. This field has been sustained since nearly the time of Earth's formation, preventing loss of water and atmospheric erosion by the solar wind. Research to understand the evolution and dynamics of the core includes measurements and modeling of its gravitational and magnetic fields, the propagation of elastic waves sampling its interior, and the theories of condensed matter physics. Outstanding problems include the unknown light element composition of the outer and inner cores, the crystalline lattice structure of the solid inner core and that of iron at 360 GPa and 6000 deg. K, gravitational and electromagnetic coupling between Earth's mantle and solid inner core, the low shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of the inner core, and the possibility of the inner core being in a superionic state.
- Nov 2212:15 PMPSLA Seminar Series: Dan KittredgeHost: Mia MaltzLocation: YNG 100Webex Link: s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars After coining the term Nutrient Density to refer to the variation of nutrient levels in food in 2007, The Bionutrient Food Association (BFA) and the Bionutrient Institute (BI) have been working to raise awareness about this important topic for more than 15 years. This presentation will cover the history of the use of the term, the research accomplished to characterize the variation of nutrient levels in food, the research to identify what causes nutrient variation, and progress in meters developed to assess that nutrient variation by anyone. As well, we will cover current research, upcoming market opportunities, and the vision for how this exciting work could serve to profoundly disrupt the dynamics of the food supply. Can agriculture meaningfully reverse climate imbalances, and be used to reverse chronic disease as well? We think so. Come here how and why! Dan Kittredge has been an organic farmer for more than 30 years and is the founder and executive director of the Bionutrient Food Association (BFA), a non-profit whose mission is to "increase quality in the food supply." Known as one of the leading proponents of "nutrient density," Dan works to demonstrate the connections between soil health, plant health, and human health. Out of these efforts was born the Bionutrient Institute, which has engineered a prototype of a hand-held consumer spectrometer designed to test nutrient density at point of purchase. Via the Bionutrient Meter, the goal is to empower consumers to choose for nutrient quality and thereby leverage economic incentives to drive full system regeneration.
