Fighting for Nature in Nineteenth-Century New York City
Thursday, September 26, 2024 12:30–1:30 PM
- DescriptionPublic parks were under threat in the dense and industrializing district of downtown Manhattan during the second half of the nineteenth century. Green spaces lost acres to infrastructure like a post office, a military drilling ground, and a railroad—even though working-class people who lived nearby depended on parks for fun and fresh air that they thought was crucial to their health. Mars Plater will present a story of working-class immigrants fighting back, defending their local park and demanding access to green space as their right.
