- Nov 2011:15 AMAlgebra Seminar - Basic monomial idealsAn ideal is called basic if it does not contain a smaller ideal with the same integral closure. In this talk, we investigate when a monomial ideal is basic. Using methods from convex geometry, we provide a clear characterization of basic monomial ideals, highlighting the similarities between the algebraic and geometric structure. We also discuss a method of calculating analytic spread with convex geometry.
- Nov 2011:30 AMGrade Smarter, Not Harder: RubricsGrade smarter, not harder: rubrics November 20 at 11:30 – 12:30 Online Presenter: Lauren Schlesselman Grading rubrics are an assessment tool that helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. Rubrics promote grading practices that are consistent and free from bias. This introductory workshop explores the elements of a rubric, methods to design rubrics with and without student involvement, and how to apply them within your courses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their rubrics for small group collaborations or their syllabus and ideas for an assignment that would benefit from a rubric. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the value and role of rubrics in measuring student learning 2. Recognize the steps in creating a rubric 3. Connect rubrics with outcomes and learning data 4. Identify an assignment in your course that could use a rubric and draft the criteriaRegistration -https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3264 (https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffins.uconn.edu%2Fsecure_inst%2Fworkshops%2Fworkshop_view.php%3Fser%3D3264&data=05%7C02%7Cstacey.valliere%40uconn.edu%7C29f3668fe19444f44e4e08dcfa803581%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C638660675783957266%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=y0J7PscPnr4hdQu%2FrWGJdfYCljH7FAKIdJ%2BkwjMdciw%3D&reserved=0)
- Nov 2011:30 AMODI Coffee Break - Open to AllThe Office for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite faculty and staff to pause and be in community with us as they are able. Many in our community are impacted by events happening on a global scale including atrocities in Israel, Gaza, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, as well as natural disasters. Often those impacted find themselves working so hard to support their loved ones and communities they forget to pause to support themselves, to take a moment to reflect, mourn, or set aside time to be in community with each other. Join us for a biweekly Coffee Break in the Student Union RM 103 at the Storrs campus where you can find some time away from the office to enjoy your coffee alone or in conversation with your colleagues.
