Lynes Faculty Scientist/Maine Health Institute for Research Center for Molecular Medicine  Host: David GoldhamerThermogenesis in the Critically Ill Research in the Lynes laboratory is aimed at understanding how thermogenic adipose tissue, which is a type of fat tissue in mice and humans that is specialized for heat generation, develops and functions in normal physiology as well as diseased states. Activated thermogenic adipose tissue is associated with decreased obesity and reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, making therapeutic strategies that increase the amount and activation of thermogenic fat attractive targets to improve public healthAbout Matthew LynesI received my graduate degree from Boston University after which I underwent postdoctoral training at the Joslin Diabetes Center focused on integrative physiology and metabolism. During this time, work that I contributed to identified the brown adipose tissue biomarker 12,13-diHOME as well as a critical role for insulin signaling in the development of brown adipose tissue progenitor cells. As a junior faculty member at the Joslin and Harvard Medical School, I continued this work to identify vascular smooth muscle cells which express the gene Trpv1 as brown adipose tissue progenitors.
