The State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark building and is architecturally impressive both outside and inside. You will learn about the history of the building as well as learn how the legislative process in CT works. Advance registration is required so that we have an accurate tour number. (Event is called ISSS Outings: State Capitol Tour) We will depart from the Kinsley St entrance of GBLC at 9:30am sharp and walk to the Capitol (approx. 20 min walk, 1 mile). Alternatively, you may travel on your own and meet the group there. The tour will last approximately one hour and you will have the option of visiting the Museum of CT History (located directly across the street) immediately following the tour (museum will be self-guided)

Event #1 Know Your Rights: Activism at the University What is student activism? What rights do students have to protest? How can the university support student political engagement? What is the relationship between UConn Hartford and the University system, between UConn and Hartford and society? In this introduction to the Series, a group of students, staff, faculty, and administrators will participate in an interactive session discussing these and other questions. In response, we have developed this new series that brings our collective experience and knowledge to bear on issues concerning the histories and roles of the university and society. Centering students and the residents of Hartford, the UConn Hartford Dean's Series on the University and Society is a series of workshops and presentations where the community meets to examine the present and imagine possible futures of the university. In the pilot semester, the Series will coordinate three events focused on activism, the student vote and the 2024 election, and post-election actions. We will collectively determine other workshops and presentations for the spring 2025 semester and beyond.Administered and funded by the UConn Hartford Dean's Office, the Series is also connected to ongoing community conversations (every 2 weeks) to allow sustained, critical reflection, refinement, and deeper inclusion.
