JDPP Debuts Book Dances: Part 1

Monday, March 31, 2025 1:00–2:00 PM
  • Location
    Hartford Public Library (Hartford)
  • Description
Justice Dance Performance Project opens its 36th year of dance/theater performance with a new work celebrating books as touchstones of freedom and justice, in partnership with Hartford Public Library and UConn Hartford Books and literacy are among humankind's greatest achievements, allowing the preservation of story, the transmission of knowledge, and the creation of community built on shared ideas. JDPP will celebrate the power of the book and the right to read freely with a new multi-iteration series of performance pieces called 'Book Dances.' Introduced by the wonderful poem by Kate Rushin originally written for Hartford Public Library (HPL), "The Library Card," the performance will take place within the Downtown Library Atrium. It will include movable vertical shelves of open-faced books that frame and define the space as the dancers explore how books impact us and enlarge our vision. In later 2025 and 2026 iterations, the piece will also include dances about what a world without books might look like juxtaposed with the rich legacy books and libraries provide. Music by composer Robert Een and words by the dancer add poetic nuance and further meaning to the dances. This is an Honors Event. See tags below for categories. #UHLevent11095
