Huskies Host Seton Hall For Senior Day Saturday
STORRS – The UConn men's basketball team (21-9, 13-6 BIG EAST) concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Seton Hall (7-22, 2-17) at 2:30 p.m. The contest will air on FOX nationally with Tim Brando and Donny Marshall on the call.
Saturday is Senior Day at Gampel Pavilion and the Huskies will honor their graduating class of Hassan Diarra, Samson Johnson and Alex Karaban prior to the contest.
The Huskies and Pirates are both battling for BIG EAST Tournament seeding as the league table reaches its conclusion on Saturday. The Huskies can finish as high as No. 2 with a win, a Creighton loss and a Marquette win on the final and will be guaranteed a top-three seed with a win. Seton Hall can earn the 10-seed with a win and a DePaul loss.
Connecticut is 49-24 all-time against The Hall, and the two sides have split their regular season series in each of the last four years. UConn will look to make it five-straight and avenge a loss in Newark on Feb. 15.
UConn was last in action on Wednesday night for a weather-delayed, late-night triumph over #20 Marquette at Gampel. Karaban led the way for Connecticut in the 72-66 victory with a team-high 21 points, including 16 in the second half and seven-straight capped by a game-sealing dagger 3-pointer in the game's final moments. The Huskies trailed by four at the half but rallied for the seventh time this season and were +15 on the glass in the crucial conference clash.
Liam McNeeley was part of all five starters scoring double-figures against the Golden Eagles and leads the Huskies with 15.1 points per game during a standout freshman campaign. McNeeley adds 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting a team-best 86.1 percent on a team-high 108 free throw attempts. Solo Ball is second on the squad with 14.7 points per game and ranks top-15 in the country with a 43.0 percent mark from 3-point range.
Karaban is the do-it-all captain of the Huskies averaging 14.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 blocks per game in his redshirt-junior season. Johnson is coming off his first career double-double and averages 7.2 points per game on a would-be-program-record 75.6 percent mark from the floor. Diarra ranks top-20 nationally in total assists and is second in the BIG EAST during league play with 6.1 assists per game and a 2.70 assist/turnover ratio.
Seton Hall is 7-23 on the year and 2-17 in conference play. Isaiah Coleman leads the Pirates with 15.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game and scored 23 against the Huskies in the first meeting.
Following Saturday's regular season finale, the Huskies will debut at The Garden on Quarterfinal Thursday of the BIG EAST Tournament. Tip time and opponent is to be determined by Saturday's result and Wednesday's First Round games.
