SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UConn men's basketball standout Alex Karaban has been named a Top 10 candidate for the Karl Malone Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday (Feb. 6). The Malone Award is in its 11th year of recognizing the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Karaban has done it all captaining the Huskies this season, averaging 15.0 points, 5.1, 3.2 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. He is among the leaders in the BIG EAST in every major offensive category and leads the league logging over 36 minutes per game.
Considered one of the great winners in modern college basketball, the Huskies are 74-17 since Karaban first took the floor and he was one of two players (Tristen Newton) to start on both of UConn's back-to-back national title teams. The redshirt-junior has posted five games of 20 or more points this season and has career-high games in assists, blocks and rebounds.
The Huskies have won three Naismith Starting Five awards in program history, with Kemba Walker (2011), Shabazz Napier (2014) and Newton (2024) taking home the Bob Cousy award. Karaban is joined by teammate Liam McNeeley on a Top 10 Watch List, as McNeeley was named to the Julius Erving Award list on Wednesday.
UConn is back in action for a top-20 showdown with No. 12 St. John's on Friday night at Gampel Pavilion.
