La Sagrada Familia Welcomes Huskies
UConn Athletic Communications / Aug. 6, 2023
BARCELONA, Spain – Sunday brought an early morning wake-up call for the UConn men's basketball team as it rushed to make a 9 a.m. flight to Barcelona, but the direct flight originated out of Nice, France, about an hour away from the Huskies' hotel in Monte Carlo.
Still, as the weary-eyed Huskies made their way through the airport, there was more than a touch of excitement as they began the second leg of their foreign tour.
With no game scheduled Sunday, the UConn travel party took advantage of the free time to have lunch at their hotel, then board buses for a visit to the world-famous La Sagrada Familia, the largest unfinished Catholic Church in the world, dating back to its start of construction in 1882.
Accompanied by an expert tour guide, the Huskies were enthralled by the magnificent structure, with its ornate architecture, and its rich 141-year history. It was hard to tell which was more impressive, the outside or the inside of La Sagrada Familia.
The remainder of the day was for rest and relaxation as the Huskies prepare for the second and third games of their trip on Monday (7 p.m. Barcelona time, 1 p.m. EDT) and Tuesday (4 p.m. Barcelona time, 10 a.m. EDT) against two Spanish Select teams.
Before Monday's game, however, UConn will squeeze in a little fun, attending a Paella cooking class in the morning at Poble Espanyol, an open-air museum.
Then it will be time to return to the hotel, eat a pre-game meal, and travel some 11 km to Olimpica de Badalona, a site that seats nearly 13,000 people and will be the site of both of UConn's Barcelona games.
