No. 11 UConn Visits DePaul For New Year's Matinee
CHICAGO – The No. 11 UConn men's basketball team (10-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) rides a six-game winning streak into the new year when it heads to Chicago for a New Year's Day matinee on Wednesday vs. DePaul (9-4, 0-2 BIG EAST). Tip-off from Wintrust Arena is set for 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT and will air on CBS Sports Network with John Sadak and Steve Lappas on the call.
Connecticut is off to a 2-0 start in league play for the second time in three season and recently completed a perfect December, bouncing back from a 4-3 start to the season to go unscathed in December for only the third time in the last 20 years. DePaul hosts UConn after a win on Saturday over Loyola (Md.) and is 9-1 at Wintrust this season. The Huskies lead the all-time series 19-1 and have taken the last 18 meetings.
UConn was last in action on Dec. 21 at Butler, winning a dramatic 78-74 battle at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Huskies went up as many as 16 in the first half but the Bulldogs battled back to even midway through the second half. A pair of clutch late 3-pointers from Alex Karaban, who scored a game-high 21, put the game away late and staved off the raucous sell-out crowd. Liam McNeeley added 17 points and a career-high seven assists for the Huskies, while Hassan Diarra scored 12 and also handed out seven helpers. The win was UConn's fifth-straight at Hinkle Fieldhouse and improved them to 2-0 in true road contests this season.
Karaban leads the Huskies in scoring this season with 16.5 points per game, adding 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 blocked shots per game. The All-America candidate is shooting 47.6 percent from the floor, a career-best 42.1 percent from 3-point range and 83.8 percent from the free throw line.
McNeeley is second on UConn in both scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg), also checking in at second among all league freshmen in both categories. Solo Ball (12.5 ppg) and Tarris Reed Jr. (11.5 ppg) also score in double-figures for the Huskies, with Reed Jr. leading the squad with 8.2 rebounds a night. Diarra leads the team with 6.2 assists per game, third-best in the BIG EAST, and is dishing out a league-leading 9.0 per game in conference action.
DePaul is a much-improved outfit under first year head coach Chris Holtmann, boasting a 9-4 record and a top-100 ranking in NET and Kenpom. Jacob Meyer leads the Blue Demons with 14.5 points per game and shoots over 43 percent from three, as does Isaiah Rivera who scored 11.4 per contest. As a team DePaul is among the national leaders with 80.1 points per game and a 38.9 percent mark from 3-point range, making 11.6 triples per game.
The Huskies continue BIG EAST play after the Chicago trip when they host Providence on Jan. 5 at Gampel Pavilion.
