- 1:00 PM1hMasters Thesis Defense of Julie-Ann AdornoEvaluating Phosphorus and Potassium Application Rates on Yield, Nutrient Uptake, and Post-harvest Soil Testing for Fall Cabbage and Corn Julie-Ann Adorno is a second-year plant science master's student and graduate research assistant at the University of Connecticut under Dr. Haiying Tao. Her current research involves evaluating sustainable fertilizers in a greenhouse setting, and field evaluation of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer application rates on fall cabbage and corn yield, nutrient uptake, and post-harvest soil testing. The current recommendations based on critical soil test values and optimum phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilization rates are derived from poorly documented, decades-old research conducted in outdated agricultural production systems and under historic climate conditions. In the NE region, the last collective effort for soil fertility trials was funded by the USDA more than 20 years ago, with a limited scope on understanding responses to P and K fertilizers. Robust soil test correlation and calibration data are needed for many modern crop varieties in the region. This research will help modernize critical soil test values for crop yield response and responsible nutrient management.

- 2:00 PM1hParticle, Astrophysics, and Nuclear Physics SeminarProf. Hal Haggard, Bard CollegeFalling Cats, Tunneling of Quantum Geometries, and Quantum Gravity After his departure, a legend began to build about Maxwell's time at Trinity College, Cambridge. The story went that he would toss cats from school windows to watch them land upright on their padded paws. (This was not so.) I will describe the true fascination that Maxwell, and many physicists after him, have had with falling cats. Indeed, a falling cat is a remarkably accessible example of a gauge theory and turns out to be mathematically identical to a model of the simplest grain of space used in loop quantum gravity. Insights garnered from this model are allowing us to create detailed pictures of the tunneling of quantum geometry in quantum gravity. This new realm of application for quantum tunneling is unexpected and rich, already lending new perspectives on quantum gravity. I aim to build upon these simpler models to describe the late stages of the evaporation of black holes and the possibility of their quantum metamorphosis into white holes.
- 2:30 PM1hGentle Therapeutic YogaYogais protective and enlivening. Freeing you from habitual patterns of tension, this yoga creates a sense of spaciousness within, dissolves stress, strengthens core muscles, joint health, centeredness, postural alignment and groundedness, increases breath capacity and breath awareness, shifts stagnant emotions into movement and release, and is attentive to the subtle stuff of the mind, helping to free us from the driving forces of unconscious actions and thoughts. You'll practice yogic techniques that you can bring into your everyday experience for simply living a good day, and for increasing your capacity to be creatively present in your life. A yogic attitude toward self and practice is one of kindness, patience, and tenderness. We grow into our best selves in an inner atmosphere of loving care. Open to all UConn students, faculty and staff from any campus. No experience required.

- 3:00 PM1hGroup Therapy: BarbershopMore info about SHaW's Group Sessions. (https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/mental-health/group-therapy/) Barbershop The "Barbershop Group" is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the "Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model"- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at "The Shop". To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. - 7:00 PM1hMoving Water | Serious Play Theatre EnsembleMOVING WATER -ACTIVATING AUDIENCES THROUGH ECO-DRAMA (Symposium version)Description: A two-hour workshop presenting 75 minutes from the story, drawing on excerpted performed scenes from the devised multi-media production, MOVING WATER 2024, with discussion following the excerpted scene presentation. The discussion will address the ensemble's research into water and climate change, the artist collaborators and the development of the scripted scenes and the magical realism movement interludes, the specific water issues addressed in the play, and the making of this unique piece of devised ensemble theatre.MOVING WATER is a devised physical theatre piece researched and collaboratively developed by Serious Play over 5 years and through the pandemic, written by Eric Henry Sanders, composed by Jonny Rodgers, with technical direction and design by Robin Doty, and directed by Sheryl Stoodley. It speaks about climate-change, rising sea levels & how water fragility shapes our human interactions. The term "Eco-drama," coined in 2007 by Theresa May, implies how environment and climate change are interrogated and promoted through performance. While connections to storytelling and nature go back to the earliest forms of recorded theatre, only recently scholars have begun to probe the ways theatre can be used to address climate change and connect audiences back to the natural world.
