- 11:00 AM1hActuarial Science Seminar Optimal Consumption under Smooth Ambiguity Shihao Zhu (Ulm University)Abstract: We study how individuals choose contingent consumption plans when the probabilities of future states are ambiguous and utility depends on the realized state. In both static one-period and intertemporal smooth-ambiguity settings, we show that ambiguity aversion shifts the decision-maker's subjective prior and alters the discount factor. We provide explicit sufficient conditions that characterize these shifts, clarifying how to identify a "worse" prior and how intertemporal consumption trade-offs amplify ambiguity's impact. Applying our framework to insurance economics, we illustrate how ambiguity aversion offers a compelling explanation for the "underinsurance puzzle" and the "annuity puzzle"—two longstanding challenges to standard expected-utility models. Speaker's short bio: Shihao is a Postdoc at Ulm University, working withProf. Dr. An Chenat theInstitute of Insurance Science (IVW). Before that, he was a Ph.D. student in Mathematics at Bielefeld University, supervised byProf. Dr. Giorgio Ferrariat theCenter for Mathematical Economics (IMW). - 11:15 AM1hDoctoral Dissertation Oral Defense, Sanbao SuAbstract: In the domain of autonomous systems, such as autonomous vehicles, perception refers to the system's ability to sense, interpret, and understand its surrounding environment in real time. This capability underpins all higher-level decision-making processes, enabling safe and efficient navigation in complex and dynamic settings. While much of the existing research focuses on improving the accuracy of perception, addressing uncertainty is equally critical to ensure efficiency, safety, and robustness. This dissertation introduces novel uncertainty-aware algorithms for key perception tasks in autonomous systems, including object detection, segmentation, and multiple object tracking. First, we propose the Double-M Quantification method for collaborative object detection (COD), which integrates a moving block bootstrap algorithm with direct modeling. This approach effectively captures both epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties in a single inference pass, achieving significant improvements in both uncertainty quantification and detection accuracy. Building on this, we develop MOT-CUP, an uncertainty propagation framework that extends COD uncertainty into the multiple object tracking (MOT) task. By incorporating uncertainty from conformal prediction and direct modeling into motion prediction and object association, MOT-CUP improves MOT accuracy by 2% and reduces uncertainty by 2.67X, with even greater benefits in high-occlusion scenarios.Expanding beyond COD and MOT, we present MetaAT, the first active testing framework for dense perception tasks such as object detection and segmentation. MetaAT leverages a Vision Transformer to estimate output uncertainty, significantly reducing annotation costs while maintaining performance. Finally, we propose alpha-OCC, an uncertainty-aware camera-based 3D semantic occupancy (OCC) prediction framework. alpha-OCC incorporates Depth-UP for uncertainty propagation from depth models to OCC and introduces hierarchical conformal prediction (HCP) to effectively quantify uncertainty under conditions of high class imbalance.

- 12:00 PM1hBirds' Eye View: Administrators Perspective on the State of Higher EducationThe state of education, in the United States and globally, has changed drastically in the past decade. Governments have sought to impose their wills; donors have altered their giving; technology and pandemic have changed teaching. Smaller schools, generally, are especially vulnerable to and impacted by many of these changes–leading many to close in recent years. This panel, composed of deans and other administrators, will offer thoughts on what the future of education might look like. CHAIR: Tobias T. Gibson (Westminster College). PANELISTS: Jamie Frueh (Bridgewater College), Ronnie M. Olesker (St. Lawrence University), Jeremy Youde (Portland State University), Gigi Gokcek (Dominican University of California), and Assaf Moghadam (Reichman University). - 3:00 PM1hGroup Therapy: BarbershopMore info about SHaW's Group Sessions. (https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/mental-health/group-therapy/) Barbershop The "Barbershop Group" is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the "Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model"- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at "The Shop". To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

(https://studenthealth.uconn.edu/mental-health/group-therapy/)Huskies on Track: Navigating ADHD at UConn This group provides a space to discuss the ways ADHD can show up in your life. We'll focus on understanding how ADHD functions in the brain, navigating common challenges people with ADHD face, and talking about the emotional experience of living in a world designed for neurotypical people. The goal of this group is to help create a sense of community and understanding for students with ADHD at UConn. Example topics that the group will cover include time management, task prioritizing, and emotional regulation. All individuals who feel the group would be beneficial to them are welcome, regardless of whether they have a formal ADHD diagnosis. To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Alyson Faires, Psy.D. For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.
