- 11:15 AM50mAlgebra Seminar - Machine learning approaches to the Shafarevich-Tate group of elliptic curvesWe train machine learning classifiers to predict the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve over \(\mathbb{Q}\), building on earlier work of He, Lee, and Oliver. We show that a feed-forward neural network trained on invariants arising in the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula yields higher accuracies (\(> 0.9\)) than any model previously studied.
- 11:30 AM1hODI Coffee Break - Open to AllThe Office for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite faculty and staff to pause and be in community with us as they are able. Many in our community are impacted by events happening on a global scale including atrocities in Israel, Gaza, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, as well as natural disasters. Often those impacted find themselves working so hard to support their loved ones and communities they forget to pause to support themselves, to take a moment to reflect, mourn, or set aside time to be in community with each other. Join us for a biweekly Coffee Break in the Student Union RM 103 at the Storrs campus where you can find some time away from the office to enjoy your coffee alone or in conversation with your colleagues. - 3:30 PM1h 15mUCHI Fellow's Talk: Daniel Hershenzon on the Enslavement of Muslims in Early Modern SpainThis talk focuses on a barely perceptible local custom practiced by enslaved and enslavers in the port city of Malaga (Spain) during much of the 17th century—the right pregnant cortada slaves had to free their child in utero, and in so doing to free them of their enslavers' dominium. Hershenzon argues that the practice, alongside labor and residence, was one of the foundations of the local enslavement regime. In this system, enslaved Maghrebis negotiated a cortado (literally 'cut') agreement with their enslavers as part of which they were allowed to labor and reside outside their enslavers' household in return for a daily or weekly payments until they paid the ransom fee upon which the parties agreed. Ransom in utero entailed protection from forced conversion, breaking the chain of status inheritability, that slavery lasted one generation, no more, and that these children ransomed in utero were allowed to return to the Maghrib, right which converted Muslims did not possess.Daniel Hershenzon is an associate professor in the Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at the University of Connecticut. His awards-winning book, The Captive Sea: Slavery, Commerce, and Communication in Early Modern Spain and the Mediterranean (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2018), explores the 17th century entangled histories of Spain, Morocco, and Ottoman Algiers. Hershenzon has published articles in Past and Present, Annales-HSS, Journal of Early Modern History, African Economic History, History Compass, Philological Encounters, and in edited volumes. His research has been supported by the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, the ACLS, NEH, and other grant foundations. While at UCHI, he will work on "The Maghrib in Spain: Enslavement, Citizenship, and Belonging in the Early Modern Spanish Mediterranean." Revising the dominant historiographic narratives about early modern Spain, "The Maghrib in Spain" offers the first comprehensive account of North Africans in post-expulsion Spain..Fumilayo Showers is an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Sociology department, where she directs the Health Professions, Health Care, and Social Inequality Lab, and the Africana Studies Institute. Her research centers on race, gender, and US immigration; the social organization of health and long-term care; health professions; care work; and immigrant workers. Her book, Migrants Who Care: West Africans Working and Building Lives in US Health Care (Rutgers University Press, 2023) is the first book to document the experiences of recent West African immigrants in a range of health care occupations in the US (nursing, disability support, elderly care). Her current research projects focus on tracing changes to US health care systems and the experiences of frontline health care workers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; the study and practice of biomedicine in non-western contexts; and the global migration of health professionals.

- 4:00 PM1hApratim Dey, PhD Student, Department of Statistics, Stanford UniversityCompressive Sensing with Stein Shrinkage Presented by Apratim Dey, PhD Student, Department of Statistics, Stanford UniversityWednesday, November 6, 2024, 4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m6ce04569549df21ef77fc19f75b86ff4)Abstract: We live in an era where sensors, radars and satellites all around us are collecting enormous volumes of data, thereby raising fundamental questions on the feasibility of data acquisition, storage and transmission. Do we really need to collect all the data? Compressive sensing, introduced in the early 2000's, posits that the answer is usually no - particularly when the data is inherently k-sparse, one can take many less linear measurements and still enjoy perfect recovery when the number of measurements exceeds a critical threshold. A lot of research over two decades has focused on understanding this critical threshold, most of it, however, deriving statements of the form "If n > C k log(n/k) then one achieves perfect recovery" [here n is the number of measurements and k is the number of non-zeros in the signal to be recovered]. Clearly, this leads to several questions: what is C? is this rate necessary? Further, a lot of emphasis has been placed on convex optimization (viz. $\ell_1$ norm minimization, also known as basis pursuit) naturally making one wonder: can we do even better? Can, somehow, n = k (the BEST possible case)? Later, inspired by ideas from statistical physics, powerful iterative algorithms (by the name AMP) developed that are able to obtain this critical threshold exactly for basis pursuit, and also provide a pathway to precisely understand the performance of potentially non-convex procedures. I shall briefly review these algorithms. Via these algorithms, we know today that with generic measurements, one is usually not able to achieve n too close to k - there is always a gap between sparsity and undersampling. However, when one measures multiple sparse signals sharing the same sparsity pattern (as is common in important modern technology), it turns out that pleasantly, one can achieve n quite close to k, even with completely unstructured measurements. However, the usual convex optimization does not work; one needs to resort to a non-convex procedure, with the help of AMP. This procedure involves the James-Stein shrinkage, and the reason behind its outstanding performance can be (surprisingly) traced to insights developed in classical statistical decision theory, particularly in the minimax estimation of a Gaussian mean. Thus, the worlds of modern high dimensional signal processing and classical statistical decision theory become one and the same.Bio: Apratim Dey is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University, advised by David Donoho. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute. His research interests span compressed sensing, high dimensional statistics, precise analysis of high dimensional optimization, and more recently, phenomena in deep learning.
