- 2:00 PM1hControl and Optimization Seminar, Reinforcement Learning for Exploratory Optimal Stopping, Renyuan Xu (New York University)Abstract: Optimal stopping is the problem of finding the right time to take a particular action in a stochastic system, in order to maximize an expected reward. It has applications in areas such as finance, healthcare, and statistics. In this talk, we investigate how to learn to make optimal stopping decisions in an unknown stochastic system via a novel reinforcement learning framework. In particular, in order to encourage exploration in the stochastic system, we randomize the stopping time through cumulative residual entropy, resulting in a singular control problem with special structures. We will discuss the regularity of the solution, the convergence of our proposed learning algorithm, and the algorithm performance on a real option example. This is based on joint work with Jodi Dianetti and Giorgio Ferrari (Bielefeld University). Speaker's short bio: Renyuan Xu is currently an assistant professor at the Department of Finance and Risk Engineering (https://engineering.nyu.edu/academics/departments/finance-and-risk-engineering) at New York University. Before joining NYU, she was an assistant professor in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (https://ise.usc.edu/) at the University of Southern California from 2021-2024, and a Hooke Research Fellow in the Mathematical Institute (https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/) at the University of Oxford from 2019-2021. She completed her Ph.D. in 2019 at the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (https://ieor.berkeley.edu/). Her research interests include stochastic analysis, stochastic controls and games, machine learning theory, and mathematical finance. Please visit her website https://renyuanxu.github.io/ (https://renyuanxu.github.io/) for more information.

- 3:00 PM1hBarbershopBarbershop The "Barbershop Group" is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the "Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model"- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at "The Shop".To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

- 3:00 PM1h 30mDungeon's and TherapyDungeon's and Therapy Role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Quest allow participants to take on the persona of fictional characters and to complete daring adventures across mysterious worlds. This therapy group takes the core elements of these games but also challenges you to set goals that will help change your behavior, attitude, and mindset in the real world. In Dungeons & Therapy, you will work with a mental health clinician to create a fantasy character that is personalized to you and your goals. This character might excel at something with which you struggle, be the complete opposite of who you are, or be designed to help you emphasize any given attribute. Within sessions of Dungeons & Therapy, you will interact with other players not only to find treasures, solve puzzles, and converse with enigmatic individuals - but also to express meaningful parts of yourself. No previous experience with Dungeons & Dragons or any other RPG is required. To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705 (tel:860-486-4705). - 3:30 PM1hAtomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics SeminarProf. Wenchao Ge, University of Rhode IslandHow to Make a Faster Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer? Trapped ions offer a pristine platform for quantum computation, but enhancing the interactions without compromising the qubits remains a crucial challenge. In this talk, I will present a strategy to enhance the interaction strengths in trapped-ion systems via parametric amplification of the ions' motion, thereby suppressing the relative importance of decoherence. We illustrate the power of this approach by showing how it can improve the speed and fidelity of two-qubit gates in multi-ion systems and how it can enhance collective spin states useful for quantum metrology. Our proposal has been further demonstrated in the experiment, confirming the enhancement. Our results open a new avenue of phonon modulation in trapped ions and are directly relevant to numerous other physical platforms in which spin interactions are mediated by bosons.
