Event #2 The Student Vote Is the student vote important? How do you vote? What's at stake for our communities? How do race, gender, and class figure in the election? In response, we have developed this new series that brings our collective experience and knowledge to bear on issues concerning the histories and roles of the university and society. Centering students and the residents of Hartford, the UConn Hartford Dean's Series on the University and Society is a series of workshops and presentations where the community meets to examine the present and imagine possible futures of the university. In the pilot semester, the Series will coordinate three events focused on activism, the student vote and the 2024 election, and post-election actions. We will collectively determine other workshops and presentations for the spring 2025 semester and beyond.Administered and funded by the UConn Hartford Dean's Office, the Series is also connected to ongoing community conversations (every 2 weeks) to allow sustained, critical reflection, refinement, and deeper inclusion. Access to safe and affordable housing remains a challenge for millions of Americans. Historical and systemic factors, including redlining and discriminatory lending practices, have disproportionately affected minority communities, contributing to disparities in home ownership and exacerbating the housing affordability crisis. Unsafe or inaccessible rental housing, as well as rising rental costs, create additional barriers to housing security nationwide. While progress has been made due to the passage of the Fair Housing Act and other consumer protection laws, the affordable housing crisis and tenant rights' violations persist. Moreover, the use of artificial intelligence in housing markets and public housing is raising new concerns. Leading scholars will discuss some of these problems and innovative efforts to address them.
