Podcast: Expertise in Treating Advanced Melanoma
Drs. Margaret Callahan and Giao Phan explain the advanced melanoma program they lead at UConn Health
When melanoma isn’t treated early, it can spread beyond the skin and turn from a dermatology problem to something that requires oncology expertise. That’s when Dr. Margaret Callahan and Dr. Giao Phan get involved. Callahan, a medical oncologist, and Phan, a surgical oncologist, arrived in 2023 to build an advanced melanoma program at UConn Health.
The place that Dr. Phan and I get involved is when there’s a real risk that some melanoma cells have broken off and traveled somewhere else in the body. — Dr. Margaret Callahan
When melanoma has spread, they can use targeted therapies and even the body’s own immune system to fight the cancer, as they explain in the latest UConn Health Pulse podcast.
