- All dayApply to Become a Pepper ScholarThe Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) at UConn (P30 AG067988; Kuchel, Fortinsky - MPIs) is one of fifteen such centers throughout the United States funded by the National Institute on Aging at NIH. "Pepper Centers" honor Claude D. Pepper, the late Congressman who advocated for senior health and research to enable older adults to maintain or restore their independence. The overarching goal of the OAIC (Pepper) Program is to enhance function and independence in older adults through research. The UConn Pepper Center is pioneering a theme focused on Precision Gerontology, an approach to aging research and the care of older adults that seeks to render interventions enhancing function and independence more effective through an improved understanding of heterogeneity and more precise targeting (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/). A key component of all Pepper Centers is the Research Education Component (REC), which provides financial support, education, and training to Pepper Scholars who Pepper Center leadership identify as showing particular promise as independent investigators. The REC at the UConn Pepper Center, led by Dr. David Steffens and Dr. George Kuchel, includes senior research leaders at UConn and Jackson Lab who could serve as mentors to Pepper Scholars (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/research-and-education-component-rec/). A mentored research project is a primary focus of being a REC Scholar. We are issuing this solicitation to early stage faculty with an interest in aging-related research. Individuals with experience in this area are encouraged to apply, as are those with research backgrounds in non-aging related fields whose research might be enhanced with a new aging focus. Physician scientists and clinicians in other disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. We anticipate funding two new UConn Pepper Scholars through this competition. Funding for two Pepper Scholar positions would begin July 1, 2025. Pepper Scholar awards are typically awarded for one year, with a second year of funding based on evidence of progress and need. Since this award is taking place in year 5 of the current UConn Pepper Center funding cycle, a year 2 Pepper Scholar Award will also be contingent upon the parent grant's successful competitive renewal. The overall goals of the Pepper Center are focused on improving function and independence among older adults. As such the following criteria for Pepper Scholar Selection were developed to be consistent with these goals: • Trainee potential and commitment to an academic career • Demonstrated commitment to aging research • Alignment of proposed training and work with the broader mission of the NIA OAIC Pepper Center Program and the focus on UConn Pepper Center on Precision Gerontology • Availability and commitment of suitable mentorship • Ability to benefit from OAIC resources As an initial step prior to submitting a full Pepper Scholar application, we are requesting that potential candidates submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), due by 5 PM on January 17, 2025. The LOI should be one single-spaced page consisting of two paragraphs. The first paragraph should highlight aspects of the candidate's educational, training, and research background that are most relevant to the Pepper Scholar program, followed by a statement of how the candidate will benefit from the Pepper Scholars program. The second paragraph should include a brief description of the research project that will be supported by the Pepper Center REC. In addition to the LOI, candidates should submit either an NIH Biosketch (preferred) or a CV. The LOI and Biosketch/CV should be addressed to Dr. David Steffens, REC Core Leader and Dr. George Kuchel, REC Core Co-Leader, and emailed to Ms. Laura Masi at masi@uchc.edu Selected candidates will then be notified by January 31, 2025 and invited to submit a full application for the Pepper Scholar Program for a March 28, 2025 deadline.

- 10:10 AM1hABC of Feminist PublishingAbout the Event Feminist publishing emerged in many places as a response to various feminist movements and in solidarity with their aims. As Ritu Menon, feminist publisher and co-founder of Kali for Women, aptly said, "Resistance was its raison d'être." The 1960s and 1970s saw the rise of a radical, international network of book womxn who supported one another through a continuous cycle of collaboration. However, the shifting political and economic landscapes of the late 1980s and 1990s led to the closure of many of these initiatives, the fragmentation of this network, and the erasure of much feminist history. In recent years, feminist publishing has experienced a resurgence, with new publishers, presses, bookstores, and archives emerging globally, revitalizing the feminist communication circuit. Yet, despite this renewed energy, starting a publishing venture remains a considerable challenge. Writing, editing, designing, printing, and distributing zines, books, and other publications are all labor-intensive and costly, often prohibitive. Torn between the activist drive to amplify marginalized and overlooked perspectives and working precariously, many emerging publishers feel lost and adrift. But contrary to what neoliberal conglomerates may suggest, publishing is fundamentally a relational enterprise—an ecosystem that thrives on collective effort and mutual support. In this lecture, graphic designer, curator, and editor Nina Paim reflects on her journey into publishing, drawing from the rich history of feminist publishing and her own experiences, both successes and failures. She will also explore the power of collectivity, networks, and collaboration, sharing firsthand the experience of co-publishing Bikini Book's first title with the Brazilian publisher Clube do Livro do Design, as well as her ongoing work translating, revising, and expanding Abécedaire d'Auto-Édition Féministe (ABC of Feminist Self-Publishing), written by Apolline and Clémentine Labrosse, and published by the French Éditions Trouble.About Nina Paim Nina Paim is a Brazilian designer, curator, and editor based in Porto. Her work spans exhibitions, workshops, and events, including Escola Aberta (Rio de Janeiro, 2012), Beyond Change (Basel, 2018), Department of Non-Binaries (Sharjah, 2018), Feminist Findings (Berlin, 2020), and, most recently, Etceteras: Feminist Festival of Publishing and Design (Porto, 2023). She has co-edited Taking a Line for a Walk (Spector Books, 2016), Design Struggles (Valiz, 2021), and Alter-Care (Esad-Idea, 2021). A three-time Swiss Design Award recipient, Nina has lectured internationally and her writing has been published by Occasional Papers (UK), Les Presses du Réel (FR), and the Korea Society of Typography (KR). In 2020, she co-founded the feminist platform Futuress.org, which she co-directed until 2023, when she launched Bikini Books, an independent publisher for design. In 2024, Nina was awarded an honorary doctorate from the London College of Communication at the University of the Arts London. This event is sponsored by the UConn Department of Art and Art History and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the Department of Social and Critical Inquiry.

- 2:00 PM1h 30mCondensed Matter Physics SeminarDr. Shafique Adam, Washington University in St. LouisA narrow magic window for ultraflat bands and emergent heavy fermions near the magic angle in twisted bilayer graphene The notion of a single "magic angle" in twisted bilayer graphene has evolved into a fascinating array of magic angles and ranges each describing different facets of the material's behavior. While the original continuum model predicted a nominal magic angle, its simplicity ignored the intricate interplay of different physical phenomena. For example, lattice relaxation [1] near the magic angle shifts its value upward, only to be counteracted by pseudomagnetic fields. Including a symmetry allowed relaxation parameter changes this magic angle to a magic range. Yet another magic angle emerges from the coupling to phonons when the Fermi velocity equals the phonon sound velocity. Building upon this rich tapestry of magical effects, we will discuss our recent work on the convergence of lattice relaxation and Hartree interaction near the magic angle [2]. We unveil a previously unreported Lifshitz transition to a Fermi surface topology that supports a "heavy fermion" pocket and an ultraflat band pinned to the Fermi energy. Analytical and numerical insights shed light on the narrow "magic angle range" where the "heavy fermion" is stable and make predictions for its experimental observation. We believe that the bands presented here are accurate at high temperature and provide a good starting point to understand the myriad of complex behavior observed in this system. Her research strives to disrupt deficit-based narratives of Black youth and Black families and instead center their strengths, resilience, and resistance. Incorporating qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches, Dr. Burnett explores how Black family processes mitigate the effects of educational inequality on Black girls' identity development and academic persistence through cultural assets and strategies. In her work, she intentionally partners with Black girls and families in the co-construction of knowledge to accurately represent their stories in a world that has historically excluded them.

- 3:30 PM1h 15mUCHI Fellow's Talk: Hana Maruyama on Alaska Native Incarcerees"I Class Myself:" Racial Classification and Alaska Native Indigeneity Paul Ozawa (Tlingit) had no Japanese ancestry to speak of—but he did have a Japanese surname. Without a birth certificate, Paul Ozawa could not prove that he was not Japanese, though it was common knowledge in his family and community that he had been adopted as an infant by Henry Ozawa, Sr. to protect his mother's reputation. Moreover, Ozawa had not seen his adoptive father since age 5, when Paul's mother had died from tuberculosis. Ozawa Sr. abandoned his three sons shortly thereafter. The three brothers had grown up in orphanages and boarding schools designed to forcibly assimilate Alaska Native children. Nonetheless, less than 24 hours before the ship transporting Japanese Americans from Alaska to Seattle was set to depart, the Alaska Defense Command informed Paul Ozawa that he needed to be onboard. In this talk, I analyze state-based processes of racial classification for Alaska Native prisoners in Japanese American World War 2 incarceration to argue that these served as a mode of what I term "archival elimination," or the elimination of Indigenous identities, sovereignty, and presence in archives. I discuss how our over-reliance on settler archives undermines Indigenous identities and knowledge. Finally, I turn to a Japanese Evacuation and Resettlement Study interview with Ozawa and his letters to show how Ozawa took up racial logics to make his Tlingit identity legible to settler administrators. Hana Maruyama is an assistant professor in history and social and critical inquiry at the University of Connecticut. Her current manuscript discusses how the federal government exploited Japanese Americans' World War II incarceration to dispossess American Indians and Alaska Natives and advance U.S. settler colonialism. She is co-curating an exhibition on UConn ceramicist Minnie Negoro that launches at the Benton Art Museum in January 2025. Maruyama also directs the Fudeko Project, a digital journaling program for Japanese American former incarcerees. While completing her PhD at the University of Minnesota (UMN), she co-created/produced the Densho podcast Campu. She formerly worked for the UMN Immigration History Research Center, American Public Media's Order 9066, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation.

- 4:00 PM1hStatistics Colloquium: Y. Samuel Wang, Asst. Professor, Statistics and Data Science, Cornell UniversityConfidence Sets for Causal Orderings Presented by Y. Samuel Wang, Asst. Professor, Statistics and Data Science, Cornell UniversityWednesday, November 13, 2024, 4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=me41b2bd4351f64316bd25a3bb8e00861)Abstract: Causal discovery procedures aim to deduce causal relationships among variables in a multivariate dataset. While various methods have been proposed for estimating a single causal model or a single equivalence class of models, less attention has been given to quantifying uncertainty in causal discovery in terms of confidence statements. A primary challenge in causal discovery of directed acyclic graphs is determining a causal ordering among the variables, and our work offers a framework for constructing confidence sets of causal orderings that the data do not rule out. Our methodology specifically applies to identifiable structural equation models with additive errors and is based on a residual bootstrap procedure to test the goodness-of-fit of causal orderings. We demonstrate the asymptotic validity of the confidence set constructed using this goodness-of-fit test and explain how the confidence set may be used to form sub/supersets of ancestral relationships as well as confidence intervals for causal effects that incorporate model uncertainty.Bio: DY. Samuel Wang (Sam) is an assistant professor in the Statistics and Data Science Department at Cornell University. Much of his research focuses on problems where the goal is to discover interpretable structure which underlies the data generating process. This includes problems in the areas of causal discovery, graphical models, and mixed membership models. He received his PhD from the University of Washington and completed a post-doc at the University of Chicago.
