- 11:00 AM1hAstronomy SeminarJeffrey McKaig, George Mason UniversityWhy Are Optical Coronal Lines Faint in Active Galactic Nuclei? Forbidden collisionally excited optical atomic transitions from high ionization potential (IP~54eV) ions (e.g., Ne4+, Fe10+, Ar10+), are known as optical coronal lines (CLs). The spectral energy distribution (SED) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) typically extends to hundreds of electron volts and above, which should be able to produce such highly ionized gas. However, optical CLs are often not detected in AGN using large scale optical surveys such as the SDSS. In this talk I will present recent photoionization calculations with the Cloudy spectral synthesis code which determine possible reasons for the rarity of these optical CLs. I will report on the observability of optical CLs given the dust content and metallicity of the gas, as well as the ionizing slope of the incident AGN SED. Our main conclusions are (1) dust reduces the strength of most CLs by ~three orders of magnitude, primarily as a result of depletion of metals onto the dust grains. (2) In contrast to the CLs, the more widely observed lower IP optical lines such as [O III] 5007A, are less affected by depletion and some are actually enhanced in dusty gas. (3) In dustless gas many optical CLs become detectable, and are particularly strong for a hard ionizing SED. This implies that prominent CL emission likely originates in dustless gas. I will also present recent work our group has conducted which indeed suggests dust is being destroyed in objects with CL emission and may indicate an important stage in AGN host-galaxy evolution.

- 12:00 PM4hHarmony of Nature II: WavesHarmony of Nature II: Waves is an international and experimental collaboration that connects audiences with nature by transforming environmental data into classical music. The exhibition is a multimedia experience of musical compositions, video, and documentary objects. Musical compositions of wavelike gestures were derived from tide gauge observations of sea level rise along the coast of the Long Island Sound, buoy measurements of the propagation of a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean, and mathematical expressions. The specific datasets chosen are direct observations, rather than model projections, and the music expresses the nuances of the flow of nature. Harmony of Nature II: Waves emphasizes the portrayal of physical phenomenon as a generative force, to create music that is both artistically and scientifically communicative. The works were created by the project's trio of members, acclaimed South Korean pianist Sophy Chung, oceanographer Molly M. James, and composer, computer scientist Max Lu.Harmony of Nature II: Waves received support from Connecticut Sea Grant Arts Support Awards Program.
- 12:00 PM4hSeaward: Coastal Paintings by Jacqueline Jones and Mary TempleJacqueline Jones, influenced by the American Impressionists of the Old Lyme Art Colony, presents plein air and studio paintings of dynamic beauty. Her lively brushwork captures the fleeting effects of sunlight, subtle atmospheres of color, and the power of the tides along New England coastlines. Mary Temple's daily Coastal Sunrise paintings represent her experience of one view off the coast of Maine. Each painting, through intensity of color and a muscular application of thick oil paint, creates a maximal experience for the viewer which is surprisingly inventive and deeply satisfying. The exhibition will be on view alongside the concurrent exhibition Harmony of Nature II: Waves Exhibition dates: April 2- May 4. Reception: April 2, 5:30-7:30 pm. Hours: Th-Sun. 12-4 pm

- 12:20 PM50mSIGMA Seminar - Differential Posets and the Algebras Associated to Them - Chinmay Dharmendra (UConn)Differential posets, introduced in 1988 by Stanley, have a number of remarkable properties. For example, the number of walks that start at the minimal element, go directly to an arbitrary element, and then go directly back to the minimal element, is \(n!\), where \(n\) is the rank of the arbitrary element. Due to this, the two known differential posets – the Young's lattice and the Young-Fibonacci lattice – are the Bratelli diagrams of algebras whose bases are indexed by permutations. The algebra associated to the Young-Fibonacci lattice was introduced by Okada in 1994. In 2024 Florent and Hivert realized a diagram model of the Okada algebra. In this talk we discuss some of the combinatorics associated with these algebras.

- 2:30 PM1hUConn Physics ColloquiumDr. Todd J. Martinez, Department of Chemistry and The PULSE Institute, Stanford UniversityDiscovering Chemistry and Photochemistry From First Principles Molecular Dynamics Novel computational architectures and methodologies are revolutionizing diverse areas ranging from video gaming to advertising and espionage. In this talk, I will discuss how these tools and ideas can be exploited in the context of theoretical and computational chemistry. I will show how the resulting advances in the efficiency of quantum chemistry can be harnessed to progress from traditional "hypothesis-driven" methods for using electronic structure and first principles molecular dynamics to a "discovery-driven" mode where the computer is tasked with discovering chemical reaction networks. We apply this reaction discovery method to methane pyrolysis, as an example where direct comparison to experimental results is possible. I show that the first principles method with no experimental input produces predictions in agreement with experiments and as good as bespoke models parameterized to experimental data. I then discuss the extension of these ideas to photochemical reactions involving electronic excited states. Finally, I describe our recent efforts to make computational chemistry tools broadly accessible for both education and research purposes.

- 4:00 PM3hParcells Lecture: Lisa Tessman (Binghamton University)On failing other people: vindicating the varieties of moral residue Human beings are quite vulnerable creatures. We are easily broken and can die unexpectedly. People that matter deeply to us can be torn away, and things that we value can be destroyed. Our greatest needs may go unmet. These are simply facts about the human condition. But we are also limited–and thus vulnerable–in another important way: we control too little about our own actions to ever be confident that we will not fail other people who are, after all, vulnerabletous. Due to factors outside of our own control, acting in ways that we take to be morally required may become either impossible or unreasonably demanding. These too are facts about the human condition. There is so much that matters to us, and so much that jeopardizes what matters to us, that relative to what would be required to take proper care of it all, there is little that we can actually do. We live at all times with this risk of failing others. It is this second kind of vulnerability on which I focus in this talk: our vulnerability to failing others and to experiencing an anguished sense of responsibility for what we take to be our failures, though in circumstances in which other people are right to refrain from holding us responsible or from even regarding us as having failed. This is the experience ofmoral residue. The experience can be not just explained but also vindicated if it turns out that our feelings of responsibility are fitting, in which case they establish a sense in which we really have failed and really are responsible. I identify the metaethical assumptions according to which the emotional experience of moral residue can be fitting, and I show how adopting these assumptions enables us to draw meaningful distinctions amongst a variety of kinds of moral residue.Lisa Tessman (https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flisatessman.weebly.com%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cmary.malley%40uconn.edu%7C577ceabc4e6b4496e1b208dd4492b2fc%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C638742119072397018%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6BuwelOdGSafnEAUPOgO4TKnMnR5TRiTR5ZlRTA4cfQ%3D&reserved=0) is a Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University in New York, and a Senior Researcher at the University of Oslo.
