- All dayYIIP - Now Accepting ApplicationsCall for Applications The Young Innovative Investigator Program (YIIP) is a 2-year program of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. In addition, some tuition expenses and fees associated with required graduate level courses are waived. Upon successful completion of year one, scholars obtain a Graduate Certificate of Research Experience in Biomedical Science. In year two, Scholars who meet the academic qualifications pursue a Master of Science in Biomedical Science involving innovative mentored research. Eligibility: The selection committee is committed to the principle of IDEAL, which stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism, and Learning, as a plan to achieve justice and equity. She is investigating the contributions of actin networks to cell migration, cell division, and osmoregulation in Naegleria, including the "brain-eating amoeba." She received her PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from UConn in 2018, and worked with Dr. Fritz-Laylin at UMass Amherst for her postdoctoral research. She is now an Assistant Professor of Integrative Biology at UMass Dartmouth. Examples from Yee, Uttich, Main & Giltner's AI Hacks for Educators will be shared, with an opportunity to practice with different generative AI tools. Session Three will demonstrate ways to prompt ChatGPT to pose Socratic questions, tutor a student through homework, and create role play scenarios, with opportunities for hands-on practice. This session is suitable for participants with minimal experience using generative AI but will be most useful if you know how to access either Microsoft CoPilot through your UConn Microsoft 365 login, or ChatGPT (both the free "mini" and paid versions will be demonstrated). Detection of AI use will not be the focus of these sessions, but we may discuss AI-resistant activities and assignments. You are encouraged to contribute your questions, ideas, and experiences. This talk explores the complex relationship between racial diversity and team performance, drawing on extensive data from the American offshore whaling industry. Despite widespread promotion of workforce diversity by various organizations, empirical evidence supporting its positive effects on performance has been limited and inconclusive. The American whaling industry, a significant economic force in coastal New England from colonial times through the early 20th century, provides a unique historical context for this analysis. Whaling crews were notably multiracial and highly diverse, offering a rich dataset for examining the impact of diversity on team outcomes. Our study utilizes a comprehensive array of historical sources, including crew lists, American Offshore Whaling Logbook and Voyages databases, U.S. Federal Census enumeration schedules, Seamen's Protection Certificate Database, and various records of Native American whalemen. The analysis reveals a U-shaped relationship between racial diversity and team performance, measured by whaling revenues. Initially, increased diversity led to a sharp decline in output value. However, at higher levels of racial heterogeneity, substantial gains were observed. This non-linear effect can be attributed to two opposing mechanisms. On one hand, more heterogeneous crews experienced a higher incidence of conflicts, negatively impacting performance. On the other hand, racial diversity positively influenced the whalemen's creativity, enhancing their ability to strike and process whales. This research contributes to our understanding of diversity's nuanced effects on team performance, offering historical insights that remain relevant in today's diverse work environments.
