- 12:00 PM1hVoices and Votes - Art, Youth, and Political Determinants of HealthIn the 2023-2024 school year, ColdSpring School 4th and 5th graders participated in a yearlong study of what it means to have a voice and cast a vote in American society using the guiding question, How do "we the people" form a "more perfect union"? By examining primary documents as well as taking field trips around the city of New Haven, students learned how, throughout Connecticut's history, activists have raised their voices to demand enfranchisement for marginalized groups. Students worked in small teams to become "experts" about six topics: Slavery and Abolition, Civil War and Reconstruction; Woman Suffrage; Indigenous Enfranchisement; Civil Rights; Post-Civil Rights/Intersectionality. Each student created original artwork that depicted voice raisers, change makers or historical events that lead to enfranchisement. The study culminated in a community- wide presentation where students showcased what they learned about the importance of raising your voice and casting your vote. Voting Rights have been hard fought for in our history, and we hope you will participate in the 2024 Presidential election. Join 5th and 6th grade students from ColdSpring School as they help Get out the Vote on UCONN's campus!

- 2:30 PM1hPDE and Differential Geometry Seminar, Order Reconstruction in Microfluidic Channels, by Lidia Mrad (Mount Holyoke College)Abstract: Nematic liquid crystals are classified as partially-ordered materials due to the tendency of their molecules to align along preferred directions. This partial alignment, combined with fluid-like properties, render these materials useful in a range of applications, including their widespread use in optical displays. When confined to thin channels, the fluid flow extends the applications of nematics further to optofluidic devices and guided micro-cargo transport. We examine the intrinsic coupling between the fluid motion and the orientation of nematic molecules by considering steady unidirectional flows in thin channels. We employ a reduced Beris-Edwards framework which leads to a system of nonlinear and coupled differential equations. Our analytical and numerical results highlight the universality of order reconstruction solutions, characterized by distinct orientational sub-domains that are separated by domain walls.

- 3:00 PM1hBarbershopBarbershop The "Barbershop Group" is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the "Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model"- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at "The Shop".To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705 (tel:860-486-4705). This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

- 5:00 PM1h 30mEmergent Strategies - Adaptive Interdependence for Collective TransformationEMERGENT STRATEGIES (2017) IS A CONCEPT DEVELOPED BY ADRIENNE MAREE BROWN, A MIXED-RACE, QUEER INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR WHO SUGGESTS THAT EMERGENT DISCOVERIES IN THE NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES REVEAL THAT CRITICAL CONNECTIONS, NOT CRITICAL MASS, ARE THE UNDER-RECOGNIZED KEYSTONES TO EFFECT SOCIAL CHANGE. LOOSELY, THIS MEANS WE DO NOT HAVE TO SEEK HIGH VOLUMES OF PARTICIPANTS, WORKING HOURS, OR EMAILS TO EFFECT CHANGE. INSTEAD, WE ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OUTCOMES WE WANT TO MODEL, INHABIT, AND GENERATE IN SMALL SPACES, ALLOWING THE TRANSFORMATION TO CHANGE THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF OUR LIVES. INSPIRED BY THE WORK OF WRITER OCTAVIA BUTLER, PHYSICISTS KAREN BARAD AND CHANDA PRESCOD-WEINSTEIN, BIOLOGISTINNOVATOR JANINE BENYUS, MATHEMATICIAN BENOIT MANDELBROT, POET-PHILOSOPHER ÉDOUARD GLISSANT, AND PHILOSOPHER-ACTIVIST GRACE LEE BOGGS, THIS TALK ADDRESSES BROWN'S RADICAL CONTENTION THAT CONNECTION, DONE INTENTIONALLY, CAN AFFECT MORE SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC TRANSFORMATION THAN MASS IN OUR CLASSROOMS, CAMPUSES, AND COMMUNITIES
