- 11:00 AM1h 5mAlgebra Seminar - Automorphic Differential Operators and Zeros of ZetaAround 1915, Polya and Hilbert independently speculated that self-adjoint operators could prove the Riemann Hypothesis for zeros of L-functions, and roughly 70 years later, Colin de Verdière advanced this idea by suggesting a physics-oriented way to make inhomogeneous equations into homogeneous ones. Making this rigorous, Bombieri and Garrett in the 2010's showed that the simplest instance of Colin de Verdière's idea does not succeed because at most 94% of the zeros of zeta can participate in the spectrum of such operators. That is, the discrete spectrum is small. This motivates understanding analogous operators with a large discrete spectrum. To do so, we build on the well-known identification of the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra with the algebra of left invariant differential operators on the group, recall an intrinsic characterization of the Laplacian/Casimir on spaces of automorphic forms, and discuss how we can attempt to understand the spectrum of related automorphic differential operators.
- 11:30 AM2h 30mEncounters - Destigmatizing Intimate Partner ViolenceDomestic Violence is a pervasive issue across our world. Every year, over 40,000 people seek domestic violence services in our state of Connecticut alone. This number is not reflective of all those who endure domestic violence, as violence often goes unreported. We need to shatter the silence. Through education, engagement, and empowerment, this program will shed light on domestic violence and explore ways to promote social change. Join us as we learn, listen, and reflect through small group discussions with facilitators and engage with experts in domestic violence services about this critical issue. This event is hosted by theDemocracy & Dialogues Initiative (https://humanrights.uconn.edu/areas-of-focus/democracy-dialogues/), a program of Dodd Human Rights Impact, The Alyssiah Wiley Program, UConn's Women Center (https://womenscenter.uconn.edu/), and UConn Hartford (https://hartford.uconn.edu/).A light lunch will be provided at 11:30 am.

- 2:00 PM1h 30mCondensed Matter Physics SeminarDr. Tien Tien Yeh, NORDITA and UConnStructured Light and Induced Vorticity in Superconductors Questions of controlling the quantum states of matter via light have been at the forefront of research on driven phases. We demonstrate the effects of imprinted vorticity on superconducting coherent states using structured light. Within the framework of the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, we show the induction of coherent vortex pairs moving in phase with electromagnetic wave oscillation. The structured light, generated by a Laguerre-Gaussian beam, provides light sources with various quantum properties, such as spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum. This state of light is also well known as an optical vortex, characterized by a twisted phase front. In the current work, we investigate the optically induced dynamics of superconducting coherent states using both normal light sources and optical vortices. These results uncover rich hydrodynamics of superconducting states and suggest new optical applications for imprinting quantum states on superconducting materials.

- 4:00 PM1hStatistics Colloquium: Alex Stringer, Assistant Professor, University of WaterlooTwo New Methods for Nonlinear Regression in Epidemiology and Environmental Toxicology Presented by Alex Stringer, Assistant Professor, Statistics and Actuarial Science, University of WaterlooDate: Wednesday, October 16, 2024,4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (http://%20https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m1fb1c2afc644a05983fb9581bc7750e7) I discuss two new methods involving additive models that are relevant to environmental epidemiology and toxicology. The first is a new cumulative exposure additive model for overdispersed count data in which the covariate being smoothed is the integrated weighted exposure to a pollutant. The weight function and the regression function are both unknown and modelled using penalized splines. The method is used to analyze several years of daily health outcome counts and their association with cumulative exposure to three air pollutants in various regions across Canada, as part of an active collaboration with Health Canada in support of the Air Health Trend Indicator project. The second is a new approach to the determination of allowable doses in environmental toxicology. The dose-response curve is fit using monotone splines and the benchmark dose and lower limit are obtained using fast implementations of Newton's method that make use of de Boor's algorithm for spline curve evaluation. The method is applied to the study of prenatal alcohol exposure and child cognition using data from six NIH-funded longitudinal cohort studies. The common theme of efficient computation with splines unites these two seemingly unrelated methodologies. If time permits, I will also discuss ongoing efforts to develop general hypothesis tests for linearity in multiple-component additive models and of zero variance components in random effects models more generally. Based on joint work with Tianyi Pan, Glen McGee, Tugba Akkaya Hocagil, Richard Cook, Louise Ryan, Sandra and Joseph Jacobson, and Jeffrey Negrea.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: Commuting polynomials, by Georgia Harbor-Collins (UConn)Composition of functions usually depends on the order in which it is done: $f(g(x))$ usually is not \(g(f(x))\). Sometimes, however, \(f(g(x)) = g(f(x))\) for all \(x\). We then say \(f(x)\) and \(g(x)\) commute. In this talk, we will see how polynomials can satisfy \(f(g(x)) = g(f(x))\). It turns out that there are only two interesting ways this can happen, and one way has an unexpected relationship to trigonometry.Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
- 6:00 PM1h12 Step Recovery Meetings12 Step Recovery Meetings are available for UConn students every Wednesday from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM at the Cordial Storrs House. - 7:30 PM1hThe Moors, by Jen SilvermanIt's 1840(-ish). Two spinster sisters, a maid (or is it two maids?) and a melancholy mastiff live out their lives on the bleak English moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a fresh-faced governess (through the door) and a moor-hen (out of the sky) sets them on a strange, dangerous path. Part Brontë satire, part Gothic thriller, part feminist rock musical, The Moors is a wholly delicious anachronistic comedy about desperation, love, and our desire to be seen for who we truly are. Directed by Kristen Palmer. "Gorgeously dark, chillingly funny, and a real treat for any Brontë fans. — West End Best Friend
