- Oct 83:30 PMLuckey Family Studies Lecture series: Dr. Monique WardThe mainstream media have emerged as prominent forces in the gender and sexual socialization of American youth, with teens consuming nearly 8 hours of media a day. However, media portrayals of women are often quite limited, with heavy emphasis on their beauty, sexiness, and sexual appeal. How might regular exposure to this content shape how girls and young women view themselves and their abilities? Most of the early research testing this question focused on traditional media, mainly magazines, on White women, and on consequences for women's body image. In this talk, I present findings from several studies that extend this work by testing contributions of traditional and social media, by investigating associations for White girls and girls of color, and by reporting consequences for girls' and young women's mental health, sexual health, romantic relationships, and academic cognitions.

- Oct 84:00 PMFrom the Constitution to the Classroom – A Dialogue on Church-State Boundaries in SchoolThis session will focus on the American education system, where the boundaries between faith and government have long been contested. The United States was founded on the principle of religious freedom alongside the vision of an independent government. Yet, from prayer in schools to the design of public curricula, the role of religion in education continues to spark nationwide legal battles, political debates, and community concern. These questions not only test the meaning of the First Amendment but also shape how students, families, and educators experience schooling today. This dialogue invites participants into a thoughtful, small-table conversation facilitated by the Democracy & Dialogues Initiative. Together, we will examine how religion and education intersect, and reflect on what these debates reveal about the challenges and promises of democracy in our time.Dinner will be providedThis dialogue is organized by the Democracy & Dialogues Initiative Student Fellows (https://humanrights.uconn.edu/areas-of-focus/democracy-dialogues/fellows/).
