- Mar 1212:00 PMUConn ARMS On Target Seminar Series: Featuring Joseph RichardsonThis session of On Target will feature Joseph Richardson, PhD. MPower Professor of African-American Studies, Medical Anthropology, and Epidemiology at the University of Maryland.Doing the Work: CVI Workers Perceptions of the Cure Violence Model and Community Centered Violence Interruption Models. To our knowledge there are no qualitative studies which investigate how community violence intervention street outreach workers (e.g., site directors (SD), program directors (PM), outreach workers/case managers (OW), violence interrupters (VI) perceive the efficacy of Cure Violence/Community Centered Violence Interruption models and if these models are aligned with the reality of their day to day CVI work. Despite numerous evaluations and studies on the effectiveness of CVI programs, we know little contextually about how CVI workers perceive the theory of change model used by Cure Violence/Community Centered Violence Interruption models and how well the reality of "doing the work" aligns with the underlying assumptions upon which Cure Violence and other Community Centered CVI models are based. Our analysis seeks to answer three questions: Question 1: How do CVI workers perceive CVI models and are they aligned with the reality of doing the work? Question 2: Do CVI programs have the capacity (within their workforce) to be able to identify highest risk people, places, and situations in order to interrupt violence. Question 3: Current Cure Violence (CV) and community centered models are structured and resourced to promote transformative changes in social norms regarding violence does this hold true for CVI workers when doing the work?

- Mar 1212:15 PMUCHI Faculty Talk: Diane Lillo-Martin on Bimodal BilingualismMany American families with deaf and hard-of-hearing children are unaware of the potential benefits of using a bimodal bilingual approach that embraces the use of both spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL). This can exacerbate detrimental effects that may result when audism and linguicism prioritize the use of spoken language exclusively. This presentation busts some widely-held myths about sign languages, and shows the results of integrating ASL into a family's language plan.Diane Lillo-Martin is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics at UConn. Her research focuses on the acquisition of ASL and its linguistic properties.

- Mar 121:00 PMCritical Teaching Behaviors Book Club - HartfordWhat does "good teaching" mean, and what does it look like? Perhaps you have grappled with this question, either as an educator seeking to improve your own teaching practice or as a colleague asked to assess the teaching of others. This book club is for you! Join us to explore an evidence-based guide to effective teaching and learning! In this book club we will examine teaching effectiveness through the lens of the CTB framework of high-level behaviors that can be adopted and adapted to individual instructor and disciplinary context. More practically, it relies on evidence that can be observed by peers, leans on student feedback, and one's own reflective narrative of teaching effectiveness. Discover equitable and inclusive strategies, participate in productive conversations centered around teaching and learning, and access a toolkit of resources to apply from day one. The book offers a holistic method of documenting and assessing teaching effectiveness by including a variety of evidence and perspectives to both develop teaching skills and demonstrate achievements in promoting student learning. Each session is framed around the questions, "What do we know," "What do we do,", and What do we show?" and will focus on: -Identifying behaviors of good teaching -Reflecting upon the teaching behaviors already in practice -Implementing research-based, effective teaching behaviors across each of the six CTB categories -Documenting teaching behaviors -Conducting and/or reflect on peer observation -Collecting and/or reflect on midterm feedback -Using a core value statement to purposefully select and frame evidence of effectiveness in a coherent teaching narrative Location: Hartford Times Building (HTB) Room 209 Time: 12-1pm Dates: February 5 – Kickoff to meet the facilitators and pick up the book February 12 – Align components of learning experiences to defined outcomes February 19 – Midterm Student Feedback using GIFT February 26 – Include for student diversity by utilizing accessibility standards March 5 – Peer Observation adapted to your needs March 26 – Engage students purposely to encourage active participation in the learning process April 2 – Assess through meaningful and transparent techniques and feedback April 9 – Integrate Technology using tools to provide access to high quality instructional materials April 16 – Reflect/Identify Core Values to explore opportunities for growth April 23 – Creating a Narrative of Teaching Effectiveness You can sign up for individual sessions or the entire series!
