- Mar 611:00 AMDoctoral Dissertation Oral Proposal, Hanbin HongAbstract:Ensuring machine learning robustness against adversarial attacks is critical for a wide variety of real world applications. This dissertation introduces novel frameworks for certified robustness and certifiable black-box attacks. First, we propose UniCR, a universal robustness certification framework for any classifier and perturbation model, automating robustness verification and optimizing noise distributions. Next, UCAN extends randomized smoothing with anisotropic noise, significantly improving certified accuracy across threat models. Finally, we introduce Certifiable Black-Box Attacks, a paradigm that guarantees attack success probability (ASP) before querying the target model. Unlike traditional black-box attacks, this method constructs an infinite adversarial space with provable ASP, effectively bypassing state-of-the-art defenses. Theoretical analysis and extensive experiments on CIFAR10/100, ImageNet, and LibriSpeech validate the effectiveness of these approaches, revealing fundamental vulnerabilities in existing adversarial defenses.
- Mar 611:00 AMHaving That Difficult Conversation with Your Graduate AdviseeDifficult conversations are just that: difficult. But they are a healthy, normal part of our work with graduate students, particularly for faculty advisor and directors of graduate programs. Whether it is providing challenging feedback or discussing a conflict, the tendency can be to avoid addressing the issue or possibly overact in a conversation. We will unpack why we sometimes avoid engaging in challenging conversations; why they cause so much stress and anxiety; and identify strategies that will help reduce stress and increase the success of these conversations. While this session will be particularly relevant to grad faculty advisors, the challenges and strategies discussed will be applicable to multiple roles and the session is open to all.FACILITATORS: Cinnamon Adams, University Ombuds & Kimberly Curry, Director of Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Support, The Graduate School See more about all Timely Topics offered by The Graduate School. - Mar 612:30 PMCOMM Speaker Series: Reimagining Connection: Spatial Computing's Promise for Social ImpactTalk Title Reimagining Connection: Spatial Computing's Promise for Social ImpactTalk Description Spatial computing tools like augmented reality (AR) are revolutionizing how audiences connect with distant communities, creating the illusion of direct experience with virtual people and places. In this talk, Danny will share insights from his ongoing projects with industry collaborators (e.g., Meta, Snap) using AR-based storytelling for social impact. He'll also showcase practical, no-code tools and workflows that empower researchers and creatives to design and test their own AR experiences—no technical background required.Bio Danny Pimentel is an Assistant Professor of Immersive Media Psychology, Fellow at Yale's Program on Climate Change Communication, and co-Director of the Oregon Reality Lab at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication. As a developer and researcher, Danny creates and tests the pro-environmental and prosocial implications of immersive storytelling through augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). His projects have been supported by Meta, Snapchat, Unity 3D, Google AR Core, and National Geographic, and his work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Scientific Reports, New Media and Society, and Journal of Nature Conservation, among others.
