- Mar 712:30 PMForging Strategies for Solidarity: Labor & Economic Rights at a CrossroadsAbout the 2025 Economic & Social Rights Conference Growing inequality since the 1990s has coincided with several system "shocks" that have deepened the precarity of working people around the world and in the US, particularly. This includes the global financial crises of 1997, 2008-9, and the COVID-19 pandemic of 2019-2020. Accompanying these global shocks has been a steady erosion of labor union power in many advanced industrial countries, catalyzed by widespread de-regulation of product, labor and capital markets. Counter to this trajectory, however, are the emergence of the Worker Driven Social Responsibility Movement in the 2010s (which has pushed for worker-designed contractual agreements in global supply chains) along with the rise of renewed union militancy in the post-pandemic moment, leading to expansive collective agreements in the North American auto industry. This ESRG Workshop focuses on the prospects for workers amidst democratic backsliding in the United States and beyond. How will labor fare and why? About Janice FineJanice Fine is a professor in the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations and director of the Workplace Justice Lab@RU within the School of Management and Labor Relations, Rutgers University. For the latter, she writes and teaches about economic justice movements and organizations including unions, worker centers, community organizing groups and other forms of collective action in the U.S and cross-nationally; historical and contemporary debates within labor movements regarding immigration; labor standards enforcement; privatization and state capacity for contract oversight. Prior to joining the faculty at Rutgers in 2005, she worked as a labor, community and political organizer and trainer for over twenty years and continues to collaborate with unions, worker centers, immigrant rights organizations and community organizing groups. She holds a B.A. in labor studies/community planning from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. - Mar 72:30 PMArt + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-ThonAre you a social crusader? Do you care about equal representation? If you answered yes to one or both questions, we want you to join us. Art+Feminism is an initiative that seeks to improve coverage of feminism, gender, and the arts on Wikipedia. The goal of this event is to increase representation of cis and trans women, non-binary people, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color on the internet. Help us build out the Wikipedia page for Minnie Negoro, subject of the current exhibition, Minnie Negoro: From Heart Mountain to UConn. Bring your laptop and learn how to research and edit Wikipedia to make it more inclusive. Led by UConn professor Kelly Dennis, the Edit-a-Thon is held in conjunction with the 2025 Digital Media & Design Faculty Exhibition and Minnie Negoro: From Heart Mountain to UConn. Kelly Dennis is Associate Professor of Visual Studies in the Department of Digital Media & Design at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. She is also Affiliated Faculty in the American Studies (https://americanstudies.uconn.edu/) program. Like 25 percent of students at UConn, Professor Dennis was a first generation (https://firstgen.uconn.edu/) college student. Dr. Dennis's research focuses on the histories of visual communications technologies as they impact the production and consumption of images, both analog and digital. She is the author of Art/Porn: A History of Seeing and Touching (Berg, 2009), which critically analyzes—from Plato to the Internet—the rhetoric of taste and the senses as they relate to class distinctions surrounding reception of the nude. Her current book project focuses on the impact of photography's dual role in post-WWII western promotion and in a regional aesthetics of landscape photography. Professor Dennis organizes the UConn node of the annual Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.
- Mar 72:30 PMSoMAM Seminar: Dr. Jose BacaIn the quest for exploring new frontiers in space, the design of modular systems has emerged as a potential solution that not only could enhance exploration capabilities but also support crew health and performance. A system is considered modular when its components are designed to function independently, each capable of performing its specific role without reliance on the entire system. At the same time, these components can seamlessly integrate to work collectively, forming a unified whole. This dual capability allows for flexibility, scalability, and adaptability, enabling the system to be customized, expanded, or reconfigured as needed to meet evolving requirements and adapt to different situations. Within a modular system, modules are designed to connect, interact, and exchange resources—either physically or virtually—through standardized interfaces or mechanisms. From modular robotic systems for exploration in unknown environments to modular systems for spacecraft habitats that can support crew health and activities.
