- Feb 241:00 PMGetting better info on student learning through rubricsGrading rubrics are an assessment tool that helps instructors and students focus attention on the important aspects of an assignment. Rubrics promote grading practices that are consistent and free from bias. This introductory workshop explores the elements of a rubric, methods to design rubrics with and without student involvement, and how to apply them within your courses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their rubrics for small group collaborations or their syllabus and ideas for an assignment that would benefit from a rubric. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:Identify the value and role of rubrics in measuring student learning Recognize the steps in creating a rubric Connect rubrics with outcomes and learning data Identify an assignment in your course that could use a rubric and draft the criteria Register - https://fins.uconn.edu/secure_inst/workshops/workshop_view.php?ser=3393 (https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffins.uconn.edu%2Fsecure_inst%2Fworkshops%2Fworkshop_view.php%3Fser%3D3393&data=05%7C02%7Cstacey.valliere%40uconn.edu%7C10da87505b654dc4c94c08dd44664efe%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C638741928383151732%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=QAlQQ3HyW47Eb0rD9jNOTwVrVzocwbaicFuAfUPuFt8%3D&reserved=0)

- Feb 242:00 PMControl and Optimization SeminarExciting games and Monge-Ampère equationsXin Zhang (NYU)Abstract: In this talk, we consider a competition between d+1 players, and aim to identify the "most exciting game" of this kind. This is translated, mathematically, into a stochastic optimization problem over martingales that live on the d-dimensional subprobability simplex and terminate on the vertices of the simplex, with a cost function related to a scaling limit of Shannon entropies. We uncover a surprising connection between this problem and the seemingly unrelated field of Monge-Ampère equations, and identify the optimal martingale via a detailed analysis of boundary asymptotics of a Monge-Ampère equation. Speaker's bio: Dr. Xin Zhang is an assistant professor in the Financial and Risk Engineering (FRE) department at New York University (NYU). Before joining NYU, he was a University Assistant at the University of Vienna from 2021 to 2024. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2021, after completing a B.S. in Mathematics at Fudan University in 2016. Xin's research focuses on optimal transport, stochastic analysis and control, particularly their applications in Finance and Machine Learning. His specific interests include viscosity solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations and optimal transport in robust finance. - Feb 242:00 PMParticle, Astrophysics, and Nuclear Physics SeminarDr. Ryan Abbott, MITNormalizing Flows for Lattice QCD Normalizing flows have recently arisen as a potential tool for accelerating lattice field theory calculations. In this talk I will give an overview of how normalizing flows have been applied to field theories, in particular focusing on recent progress applying normalizing flows to lattice QCD as well as current efforts to scale flow models towards modern lattice field theory calculations.
