- Feb 21All dayYIIP - Now Accepting ApplicationsCall for Applications The Young Innovative Investigator Program (YIIP) is a 2-year program of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. In addition, some tuition expenses and fees associated with required graduate level courses are waived. Upon successful completion of year one, scholars obtain a Graduate Certificate of Research Experience in Biomedical Science. In year two, Scholars who meet the academic qualifications pursue a Master of Science in Biomedical Science involving innovative mentored research. Eligibility: The selection committee is committed to the principle of IDEAL, which stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism, and Learning, as a plan to achieve justice and equity. A priority for the program is increasing (1) individuals traditionally underrepresented and marginalized in the biomedical sciences and (2) first-generation students. For more information about IDEAL please visit: https://www.aiche.org/equity-diversity-inclusion/statement. All applicants must: • Have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of an overall 3.0 GPA. • Demonstrate high motivation and potential to become a basic scientist with a goal of attaining a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. • Meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program. • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. - Feb 2110:30 AMUkraine: What's nextAfter 1,000 days of battle, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy admitted that its annexed territories could not be returned by military means. That same weekend, the UK government hinted that peace talks were likely, protests erupted in Georgia, the Syrian regime fell and the Russian economy stumbled. This and Donald Trump's return sparks an inevitable question: what next? NATO membership is not remotely on the cards for Ukraine, but what is? Can Ukraine and its neighbours become European democracies or stay plagued by the same unresolved issues? Will sanctions go and relations be normalised or will Russia become more isolated and inward looking? How will Russian society reckon with the invasion? What of the millions who fled Russia and Ukraine, and the problems their absence poses? Three years ago, ISA welcomed a group of scholars to explain the invasion and outbreak of war. With the end in sight, they have returned to discuss these questions. The original webinar, Ukraine: Terra Incognita, can be found here: Current Events Analysis - Ukraine: Terra Incognita (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nsyuWdligs). PANELISTS: Tetyana Dzyadevych (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), James C. Pearce (City College Peterborough), Anastassiya Mahon (Independent Scholar), Nino Gozalishvili (University of Georgia), Natalia Stercul (Moldova State University), and Andrei Korobkov (Middle Tennessee State University). - Feb 2111:00 AMMarine Sciences Seminar: Rebecca SeldenRebecca SeldenWellesley CollegeWarming Waters, Shifting Fishes: Vulnerability and Resilience of Food Webs and Fishing Communities As waters warm, species are shifting out of historically important areas and moving into new ones. Where species shift at different rates, food webs can be altered, with important consequences for marine ecosystems. For coastal communities, changing availability of target species can result in differential vulnerability to climate change. Likewise, social, economic, and technological constraints can limit the type and magnitude of the response by fishing communities. We find that variation in piscivore temperature preferences can alter how warming affects predator-prey overlap. Diversity in thermal traits among predators can buffer the net ecosystem effect of warming. Likewise, fishing communities vary in their "foraging" traits in ways that can alter their vulnerability and resilience to climate-driven changes in target species. Fishing communities demonstrate distinct capacities to shift what they catch or where they fish that vary in part based on gear types. The portfolio of fleets that land in a port can result in categorically different capacities for change for ports separated only by tens of kilometers. Understanding trait differences in both social and ecological systems will be key for predicting impacts of climate change and prioritizing efforts to enhance resilience.Host: Catherine MatassaTime & Date: 11:00 am, Friday, February 21, 2025Place: Lowell Weicker Building, Seminar Room 103 (or Webex)Request Seminar InformationCancellation & Additional Seminar Details (https://marinesciences.uconn.edu/seminar/seminar1253/)If you are an individual with a disability and need accommodations, please contact 860-405-9152 (tel:+18604059152) or email marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu (mailto:marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu).
