- Oct 83:30 PMMCB Seminar Series: Dr. Andrew LombardoDr. Andrew LombardoAssistant Professor of Biochemistry University at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine Host: Dr. Aoife HeaslipHow Cytoskeletal-Membrane Interactions Define Cell Shape, Polarity, and the Severity of Human Disease How can a small group of cytoskeletal polymers organize cells into the conicopia of shapes and structures needed to build a human? I'll describe what is known, and is unknown, about the regulation of human cell polarity and shape.Bio: Dr. Lombardo originally trained as a nuclear physicist in the laboratory of Charlie Freeman, Chair of Physics, at SUNY Geneseo in undergrad before switching paths to Biophysics. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Vermont in Biophysics in the laboratory of David Warshaw where he was taught cell biology by a talented postdoc in the lab, Dr. Aoife Heaslip. Lombardo's thesis focused on how the actin cytoskeleton's organization influences the forces produced by non-muscle myosins. He then went to Tony Bretscher's lab at Cornell University for a postdoc focusing on the regulators of the actin cytoskeleton responsible for producing and maintaining cell shape and polarity in human epithelial cells. Dr. Lombardo recently started his independent investigative career as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Lombardo's lab focuses on how human cells produce and maintain polarity using the lab's expertise in single molecule biophysics and state-of-the-art super resolution fluorescent imaging.Link to publication (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0109082)Lombardo Website (https://ActinMyosin.com)
