Huskies Fall in 2 OT to Providence

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The UConn women's field hockey team fell to Providence College Friday afternoon by a final of 3-2 in double OT. The Huskies held a 2-1 lead but the Friars scored two unanswered to come away with the win.

The Huskies started off strong as freshman Juul Sauer collected the ball following a penalty corner and rifled a shot through the defense for the 1-0 lead. Late in the first quarter Providence responded with a goal of their own to tie the game at one. The tie was short lived as the Huskies were able to retake the lead when Julia Bressler fired a shot off a penalty corner that found the back of the net as time expired in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the quarter. Both teams had their chances, but the goalkeepers stood strong turning away any shot that came their way. With neither team generating offense in the second quarter, the Huskies entered the half with the one goal lead.

Early in the third quarter Providence found the equalizer once again. Both teams battled in the remaining minutes but tying goal by Providence was the last goal scored during regulation. With both teams tied at two, the teams would head to a sudden death OT period. Once again defense shined as neither team was able to find the game winning goal in the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, UConn looked primed to win the game on a breakaway but a diving save by the Providence keeper kept the game tied at two. Shortly after following a penalty corner, Providence was able to find the back of the net on a deflection and win the game.
