- May 24:00 PMUConn Physics SPS ColloquiumProf. Thomas Katsouleas, UConnSurfing at the Speed of Light: History, Status and Prospects for Plasma-based Particle Accelerators Large particle accelerators are the traditional tool for exploring particle physics – the fundamental constituents of matter and forces in nature. This talk will explore the use of ionized plasma gases to support extremely large electric fields that can potentially miniaturize a particle accelerator. The history and principles of conventional and plasma-based particle accelerators will be reviewed as will the status of current experiments. Laboratories around the world are producing beams of unprecedented brightness with plans to use compact plasma-based accelerators for X-ray lasers, proton therapy and experiments at the energy frontier in the next decade.Speaker's BIO: Thomas Katsouleas is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Professor of Physics at UConn. He is the co-inventor of plasma wakefield accelerators, plasma lenses, the surfatron, the plasma afterburner and several high-power light sources based on plasmas and beam. He co-led a major experimental campaign at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center that holds the record for the highest energy electrons and positrons attained with a plasma accelerator. He is a fellow of the IEEE, NAI and APS and the recipient of the Gordon Prize in Engineering Education from the NAE. Note: The pre-colloquium reception will be 3-4pm in the Gant Light Court
- May 25:00 PMAll Recovery MeetingsAn All Recovery meeting is 'non-denominational' meaning all pathways of recovery are embraced here. Meetings are facilitated by a student member of the URC with support from a Recovery Coach and are held both in-person and online for students from other UConn campuses.
