- May 211:00 AMMarine Sciences Seminar: Nick RecordNick RecordBigelow Laboratory for Ocean SciencesOcean forecasting: How to study the future The fate of humanity is tied to the fate of the ocean, so we're compelled to try to know, predict, and shape the ocean's future. Studying the ocean's future requires integration across disciplines and across borders, from physics, to ecology, to humanity, locally and around the world. In 2020 we launched the Tandy Center for Ocean Forecasting as an interdisciplinary digital hub with the aim of co-designing ocean forecasts to make accessible and equitable tools for prospering in a changing ocean environment. Forecasting projects range from toxic algae to endangered right whales. Four years of running the center have given us a chance to reflect on the different roles of forecasts, what makes them successful or not, and their limitations and barriers. Ultimately, forecasting is a social act, embedded in bias, power dynamics, and reflexivity. Still, as the climate and biodiversity catastrophes loom, the act of imagining the future can, itself, be an act of hope.Host: Paola Batta LonaTime & Date: 11:00 am, Friday, May 2, 2025Place: Lowell Weicker Building, Seminar Room 103 (or Webex)Request Seminar InformationCancellation & Additional Seminar Details (https://marinesciences.uconn.edu/seminar/seminar1253/)If you are an individual with a disability and need accommodations, please contact 860-405-9152 (tel:+18604059152) or email marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu (mailto:marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu). - May 212:00 PMHarmony of Nature II: WavesHarmony of Nature II: Waves is an international and experimental collaboration that connects audiences with nature by transforming environmental data into classical music. The exhibition is a multimedia experience of musical compositions, video, and documentary objects. Musical compositions of wavelike gestures were derived from tide gauge observations of sea level rise along the coast of the Long Island Sound, buoy measurements of the propagation of a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean, and mathematical expressions. The specific datasets chosen are direct observations, rather than model projections, and the music expresses the nuances of the flow of nature. Harmony of Nature II: Waves emphasizes the portrayal of physical phenomenon as a generative force, to create music that is both artistically and scientifically communicative. The works were created by the project's trio of members, acclaimed South Korean pianist Sophy Chung, oceanographer Molly M. James, and composer, computer scientist Max Lu.Harmony of Nature II: Waves received support from Connecticut Sea Grant Arts Support Awards Program.

- May 212:00 PMSeaward: Coastal Paintings by Jacqueline Jones and Mary TempleJacqueline Jones, influenced by the American Impressionists of the Old Lyme Art Colony, presents plein air and studio paintings of dynamic beauty. Her lively brushwork captures the fleeting effects of sunlight, subtle atmospheres of color, and the power of the tides along New England coastlines. Mary Temple's daily Coastal Sunrise paintings represent her experience of one view off the coast of Maine. Each painting, through intensity of color and a muscular application of thick oil paint, creates a maximal experience for the viewer which is surprisingly inventive and deeply satisfying. The exhibition will be on view alongside the concurrent exhibition Harmony of Nature II: Waves Exhibition dates: April 2- May 4. Reception: April 2, 5:30-7:30 pm. Hours: Th-Sun. 12-4 pm
- May 212:15 PMPSLA Seminar Series: Lindsay TriplettHost: Sohyun ParkLocation: YNG 132 When: Friday May 2nd 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM Webex Link:s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars (http://s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars) Plant productivity is intricately linked to its microbiome, as beneficial microbes can solubilize nutrients, enhance stress tolerance, and inhibit pathogens. Diverse predatory eukaryotes called protists are an abundant but little-studied part of the rhizosphere environment. Protists shape the bacterial community through selective predation, enhancing the fitness and activity of certain plant beneficial bacteria. But how do the bacteria benefit from predators? This question inspired our plant bacteriology lab, through collaboration with UCONN, to expand our focus to protists and their effects on rhizosphere bacteria. Using amplicon, metagenomic, and transcriptomic sequencing of the protist and plant microbiomes, we identified signaling traits prevalent among protist-associated bacteria, and found that some of the molecular signals promoted growth of diverse protists. By understanding how beneficial bacteria interact with protists, we hope this research will reveal new strategies to optimize sustainable crop production. Lindsay Triplett is Agricultural Scientist, Department Head of Plant Pathology and Ecology, and Vice Director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. She grew up in rural Indiana and earned a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University, focusing on bacterial plant pathogens, before completing postdoctoral research at Colorado State University. She loves living in Connecticut and doing interdisciplinary research at a small institution.

- May 212:20 PMSIGMA Seminar - Modular Curves and Their Connection to Elliptic Curves over Number Fields - Dylan Costa (UConn)Modular curves can be viewed as quotients of the upper half-plane by certain subgroups of \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\), giving them a structure as algebraic curves defined over number fields. In this talk, we will explore the construction of these curves and their relationship with elliptic curves over number fields. We will introduce Galois representations attached to elliptic curves and discuss how modular curves appear in the study of these representations. Using this framework, we will see how modular curves encode information about rational torsion points and control the possible torsion structures that can appear as part of the Mordell-Weil group of an elliptic curve. As an application, we will discuss Mazur's theorem on the classification of torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb{Q}\) and how modular curves arise in the proof.
