Huskies Win in Home Opener
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's lacrosse team (2-4) beat the Hofstra Pride, 13-11, in their home opener on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.
Senior, Lauren Barry, opened the game with a goal in the first minute of play. Barry's goal was quickly followed-up by Kate Shaffer to put the Huskies up two. Hofstra's leading scorer, Melissa Sconone, who had five goals on the day, cut the lead with just under 12 minutes on the clock. Rayea Davis, Eliza Bowman, and Susan Lafountain rounded out the first period offense for the Huskies with a goal apiece.
UConn was up one on Hofstra as the second quarter started. The Huskies struck only once in this quarter, four and a half minutes into the period on a goal from Jenna Giardina. The Pride scored twice with less than five minutes to go, tying the game up as both teams headed into halftime.
Davis, who scored in the first, put up back-to-back goals for the Huskies in the third before Sconone notched her fourth of the game. This earned Davis a hat trick, the first of the day for the Huskies. Lafountain and Bowman each scored again to give the Huskies their largest lead of the day at 10-7. Hofstra scored once more before the end of the third, keeping them within two.
The Pride scored first in the final quarter of the game, down by only one goal at this point. Bowman notched her third of the day shortly after, and her first hat trick with the Huskies. Down by two goals again, Sconone, scored her final goal of the day to put the Pride back within one. Lafountain followed-up with another UConn goal, giving herself a hat trick. Hofstra scored again with under 90 seconds left on the clock. After winning the draw, UConn killed time as they passed the ball around the offense. Seeing an opening, Davis sealed the win for the Huskies with just seconds left.
Goalkeeper, Landyn White, had 12 saves in the win. Three Huskies scored three or more goals today to lead the UConn offense; Davis had four goals and an assist, while Lafountain and Bowman each had three goals. Madelyn George, grad student midfielder, had eight draw controls on the day, and two ground balls.
The Huskies will host the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday, March 16th. Opening draw is slated for 1:00 pm and can be streamed on UConn+.
