UConn Back in Action at Paul Short Run
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's cross-country team returns to action this Friday when they take part in the 48th Annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh.
The Huskies will take part in the Women's College Gold 6K race, stepping off at 11:45 am Friday morning on the Goodman Campus Cross Country course in Bethlehem, PA.
After three season-opening races and a month of training, the Huskies roll out their top line-up this week as they hit the mid-season stretch. UConn sophomore Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario) will make her season debut. Thomas, who ran for Team Canada at this summer's U20 Championships, had an outstanding freshman cross country season, earning All-BIG EAST honors with a seventh place finish and followed that up with a 14th place showing at the NCAA Northeast Regional in a season-best time of 21:05.06 for All-Region honors.
Junior Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, CT) made her season debut at the Providence Friar Invitational earlier this month and took third place in the field, clocking in at 17:42.92 on the 5K course. Also debuting at the PC race was grad student Randi Burr (Westerly, RI), ninth overall at 18:21.51 and junior Rachel Woodruff (Saranac, NY), 10th with a time of 18:27.51. Grad student Celia Chacko (Newington, CT) made her debut at the Iona race two weeks ago and finished in 10th place overall (19:16.40). Senior Caroline Webb (Greenwich, CT) got the year off on the right foot by leading UConn to a win at Marist by picking up her first career victory and a new PR time (18:20.8) on the 5K course.
The Huskies had a chance to really utilize their freshmen and young runners in the early weeks of the season. Freshman Maddie Sweeney (New Milford, CT) has had a strong start to the year, and was the Huskies' top-finisher (8th) at Iona, matching her top-placing of the season from back at the Marist Season Opener.
Following Friday's race, UConn will be off until October 15 when they run at the Virginia Invitational in their final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship at the end of October.
